That isn't even close to the same mesh. That's just a punched plate. I used high quality heavy double crimp stainless steel woven mesh. Sometime you have to pay a little more to have a quality product. I did a lot of research and shopping around before I purchased the mesh.
Hey I was looking to do something like this as well- I noticed that the stock countryman grill covers up the direct area in front of the air intake- thus no direct wind shooting right in there. This would clear it up (im a fan of optimizing what is already on a car without dropping a few grand- when normally im trying to save on gas and not...gas it). I know you have only done this shortly but do you have an concerns on direct rain entry in to the intake?
I think it looks great! And you did a terrific job on it.
Have you considered doing the lower grille area to match? Cuz that would look even better, IMO.
Either way, it's very cool.
I don't think the rain will be a factor at all. I've ordered an extra lower grille so I can make a matching one before I pull the bumper off to swap it. I've had the bumper off before and I know it takes a while, so I only want to do it once.
So only my opinion....given the blue with grey stripes....if you are going for a "look"....wrap your headlights, tai lights, grill surrounds in a great to match the stripes....a lot of work....but that's what we do with Minis....but also looks "better" black....good job!

The car is actually Absolute Black with Matte Black stripes. I do want to black everything out, but I'm still on the fence. The chrome grille stands out so much more and gives it that "classy" look that you get from shiny things.

I looked at it again, and I see what you are saying about rain getting in there. I might get some race mesh to put behind the grille just in case...
I went ahead and blacked it out. I like it, but it definitely made it very subtle.
Great idea! Now you need to blackout the radiator behind it. you could also try painting the mess gunmetal that way it will still pop but not stick out.
