One problem I did have is when I masked the car it was very hot, so when peeling the masking tape off all the glue stuck to the cars paint >:

What kind of paint did you use? Also the BMW crowd has been doing this mods for the better part of like 20 years. Its called the black line mod because you can buy BMWs with black line from the factory where the chrome is blacked out.

Ahh that makes a lot of sense as my father in law has an x5 with the black trim as standard, the paint I used is called rust-oleum it dries between coats in less than 15 mins, no runs, no overspray , it costs £17 a can, I'll update the finished product as soon as the sun comes out!

Yeah we got rust-oleum over here on this side of the pond and 17 pounds is pretty expensive for paint. I think the conversion is right around $21 a can and we can get for about $7 a can.

Did you consider black out tape from Outmotoring? I think it's easier than all the taping and masking that you did.

I don't know what tape Outmotoring uses but I got mine direct from 3M and its been on for 11 years now . I replaced one section that I scratched a bit two years ago so that might bring my total install time up to a hour at most.

Looking forward to seeing your complete pics .

Same here.

But when it comes to the tape for the belt line, prep is key. Dawn dishwashing soap / hot water and a scrunge, and I even used Alcohol wipes after that and still got more crud off before finally applying the tape.

Nice paint job, is it PD or real paint ?

First of all I cleaned up the chrome, made sure it was completely dry and using an aerosol can of Rust-oleum began priming, I probably did 3 or 4 coats, sanded down primed again and finally finished with the black, again 3 or 4 coats, really happy with the job, now to start looking a diffuser, hood scoop and spoiler, really like yours randy!

I did a similar job on mine although I had it professionally done at our bodyshop. Smoked all but the front lights. Satin black all the chrome except for belt line and mini badges. Name: 20140625_112445.jpg

It looks pretty good painted. I love the black/Red contrast of your Coop. My favorite after White and Black ;-)

I actually ordered the tape from Outmotoring yesterday and plan to put it on this weekend. I'll post some pics to show what it looks like once it's done. I considered going the paint route but I figured the vinyl tape would save a ton of time.

The other project I'm gonna be doing is using vinyl tape on the interior with all the gray trimming and make it black. Again I was going to paint it and then decided it would be better to use the vinyl tape. (For that I'm using the 3M 2' x 36yd matte black tape).

Yeah that looks good, it's just I was after a matte finish not a gloss, although I am now considering a gloss topcoat, as for time taken i literally started masking around 11am and was driving home at 5pm, so around six hours - not too bad.
Going to get a VERY light smoke for my front head lights/fog lights, side repeaters and back lights, then and only then will I be happy, that is until I find something else to customise )

Did you sand the chrome down any before painting? Paint doesn't adhere to chrome well ..

I ended up going the vinyl route. Painting them wasn't worth the hassle and removing the pieces was a bit tedious so proper prep was impossible. I did paint the rings on the headlamps/taillights, side scuttles, and had all of those tinted.
