Water Temp reduction trick....

I've found lots of threads here about how hot these direct injected motors run. My 2010 MCS in traffic can touch 226 degrees on my ScanGaugeII.

I read an old thread that says if you turn the AC on "MAX" it changes the setting of the electronic thermostat and lowers the temp. Sure enough it does. Goes down significantly right away, to around 172-177.

The trick I discovered today is this: After the temp was down, I turned off the climate control all together (I have auto climate control). The water temp stayed in the 170s my whole way to work (even at idle). I feel much better with it running cooler and may do this all the time just to lower the temp. It just can't be that good for the engine to run that hot. I know the real reason (the only reason) they do it for emissions.

Try it. (BTW I was in Sport mode as well.)

I'll have to give that a try when I receive my OBD2 device.

Perhaps it was the electric fan turning on since that happens much more frequently once you enable AC

You might as well leave it on becuase even turning it off at the switch it is not turning it off at the source. It is like that in all cars. THe amount of cooling that you are seeing is not proportional to the fact that compressor is still engaged and causing you to lose power(well in the conventional train of thought, things have change with newer cars).

Another way to lower the set point is to engage Sport Mode - temp will drop, AND you will get better throttle response, crisper steering and that lovely burble and pop...

yes, he stated that he left/turned on sport mode.
well documented here to lower temps also
so the turn on air then turn off may not actually HOLD the temp but keep it there all the while being lowered by the sport mode driving

but both ac on and sport mode are listed many times here applying to engine temps!

I have encountered this in my car with my Scangauge II, but I virtually never run in Sport mode. (I'm in FL though, so my A/C's been starting to come on a lot lately).

However, when I turn the A/C off, the temps do tend to come back up.

They will go back up with ac off
That's why when he stated that he turned or had the sport mode on, the temps stayed down!

Sport mode does nothing for temps on Pre-LCI cars and some of the post LCI (11s and 12s?).

The AC settting does work though.

Exactly why are you concerned about 226f water temp? I'm a mechanical engineer, and was a member of ASME, and S.A.E. and I'm not at all worried about it. The design parameters of new engines are very different.

Don't worry about it.
