Post up or shoot me a PM thanks!
From what I understand the dealer has to get your key programmed. Look in the Forums section under the 1st Generation MINIs under R50/R53 :: Hatch Talk (2002-2006) area and search for key or key programming. I know member Valvashon knows a lot about this stuff.
Not sure this is what you are looking for, but this might help someone:
The button on my key fell apart, but the electronics were still working. I got something like this:
Amazon.com: Hq NEW Smart Remote Keyless Key Case Entry Shell for BMW Mini Cooper FOB Replacement: Automotive
I then had to move the circuit board and transponder from the old key to the new one. Last, I had to take both the old and the new key down to a locksmith to cut it.
The "got-yas": Clearly, this will not help you if you lost a key. Only the dealer can help you with a lost key (that I know of). While the blank I got was good, I dont think it was really quite as high quality as the factory one. Moving the electronics is not hard, but take care as it is possible to damage this part. Also, the transponder is a tiny black block (for lack of a better term) that is easily overlooked. It is glued in, but can be removed with a little care. Maybe you can get the locksmith to move those parts also? Lastly, the locksmith is by far the most expensive part. Call and get a quote from that guy before buying the blank. The locksmith I found had many blanks for BMW and others, but not Mini, and not as cheep as the one on Amazon.

There is nothing more important to your car than the a KEY you can rely on.
