Is a CEL inevitable when installing aftermarket exhaust?

Hi folks,

I have looked everywhere for a thread addressing this question.

I am looking to install either an Akropovic or Alta JCW exhaust system. Both systems are downpipe-back, and I would maintain the stock downpipe in either case.

my 2013 R56 JCW is virtually brand new and I really don't want to get into mods that are going to throw codes and then get into a whole finger pointing session with Mini and warranty.

someone told me that installing any downpipe-back exhaust will typically cause a CEL and throw a code.
'
I was wondering what your experience has been in this area?

thanks very much!

Jeff

You'll only throw a code if you replace the downpipe with a high flow or catless version.

I think that the confusion is in the term "downpipe back". To a lot of people that means you're replacing the downpipe too.

Agreed.

Turbo back should refer to the full exhaust.
Downpipe back exhausts start at the v band flange.
Cat backs start after the second cat.

Dp back or cat back will not throw a code but dp back in a S may not pass emissions. Cat back retains all OEM emissions equipment, JCW or otherwise. With your 13 jcw, you likely don't have a second cat and already have a decent exhaust.

As long as you keep your downpipe/1st cat stock then you should not have CEL issues. Also of the 2 exhaust mentioned, I'd recommend the Akra Exhaust. There have been countless reports of love for this exhaust. It is pricey, but the build quality is 2nd to none.
