R56 When to switch away from runflats?
When to switch away from runflats?
Our 2010 MCS has runflats on it now with a pretty decent amount of tread (I would guess 90%).
I don't have any particular gripes about them, as I have nothing to compare to, but I'm wondering if the current rims will support standard tires, or will I have to get new rims in order to make the switch. I read that the OEM rims are manufactured with run-flats in mind (more contact surface between the rim and tire).
Your advice greatly appreciated!

There is nothing special about MINI rims. They are heavy, but strong. If you can stand the runflats, keep them until they are worn out, then consider regular tires and a flat-fix kit.
I replaced my runflats a few weeks ago with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Not only is the handling much improved, but the tires are much quieter. It even rides better. I had them mounted on my stock MINI wheels with no problems. No regrets here, except maybe that I should have done it sooner.

Did you do a search, keyword 'runflats', and run screaming from all the reading that lay before you? There is nothing nice being said about runflats to be found. Use 'em up if you choose but decide early what to replace them with. Hi performance tires are fun to challenge the twisties but don't give much more than 20 to 30K. Any of a dozen makes of inexpensive all season tires will do you as good as any. If you need snow tires for winter look into a set of steel wheels and Blizzaks.
