Tickets for Window tint in NY?

Really wanna get my windows tinted on my r53, but hesitant with the strict nys tint laws. Looking for input from you guys from ny about any trouble you have with your tinted windows.

I was on the same boat, I'm in NYC and I had tickets before in two different cars, luckily just one window each time, they were 35% so I was hesitant to get tinted windows on my R53.... That ended 3 months ago when I put 35% tint all around AGAIN lol, I hate getting pull over for that but so far no problems, let's see how long that will last. I'm sure that I just jinxed it lol.

I have a friend with an R53 with 35% and he was pulled over twice, one for the exhaust and one for lic plate cover but didn't get a ticket for tints, you never know. The legal tint is 70% so you may as well put nothing on them lol. Good luck

My last ticket was years ago ( 8 ) I think that was about 60.00 for one window if I remember correctly. I think that they wave the ticket if you take that tint off within 24 hours but I'm not sure if that's true or not.

Very true! BUT.....it still sucks to get pulled over! Knock on wood...I've been good so far.

Once these are due to be replaced though, I'm going with 5%. That's what I used to put on my cars.

Yeah, check the DMV website, i think that only window the rear window can be tinted as dark as you like, not sure about the rears side windows, the officer told me that he could give me a ticket for all 4 windows, but he just measured the % on only the drivers side window and gave me a ticket just for that one.

Could be wrong, but I don't think it's per window. I know in '11 and '12, the total cost was about $80 and most of that was in fees. It's one of those "fix it" tickets so they generally aren't that pricey. Just a pain in the a$$ and time taken away from motoring when you get stopped. Lol

@bavmotors
Sorry if the link didn't help you.
If you already know the NYC laws, then what your asking for is how far to stretch the law....aka: break it?
Most of us/those who push the limits just find the fine amount and decide if we can live with it!
But again, sorry for not knowing what you know.

@13R56S
Your welcome
I didn't know about this web site(the linked one) before reading the OP's post.
Glad to pass along useful information.

No harm done bubbajcw, I'm just wondering if the police are pulling those over with tint enough that it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

i've put 20% on my cars, hubby has 5% on his. both of us have gotten tint tickets in the past. we would get pulled over for some bs, and they would give us a tint or exhaust ticket as a "gift" instead of whatever thing they claim we were doing (which usually was racing - i was accused of racing a 75 year old guy in a malibu once as an excuse to pull me over). what i find to be the bigger component to getting pulled over is the type of car you drive, not really the level of tint. mini's aren't seen as teenager idiot driving cars, so they tend to leave us alone. mustangs, neons, evos, yeah you'll get pulled over in a second.

it also seems to depend on where you live. closer to the city they tend to leave us alone because they have more important things to do. from what i hear though when you get in the boonies (you know, north of white plains) they are much more likely to pull you over out of sheer boredom.

That's what I'm curious about, is the mini a car police tend to pull over for tint? I live in the boonies however.

Just factor in the cost of the tints plus fines, you won't get pull over all the time, I don't worry about it anymore that's why I got the 35% not too dark although black interior will make it look darker but with sunlight looks light not bad

By the way, I paid just 100.00 for my tints in the city just the way I like the no gap in the fronts :-) one year warranty

just put 50% on the driver, passenger side and 35% on the other. as long as the cops can "see" you and the passenger, u will be ok...

Anyone have any photo examples of tint percentages? Preferably with a lighter interior color.

We bought our pre-owned Clubman from a MINI dealer just as it sits. We like how it helps keep the sun out in the hot California summers. We have not been pulled over for it in the two years we have owned it.
