TPMS when getting new tires

Going to order some tires online and have them installed... anything special I need to note (or tell the installer about) regarding the tire pressure monitoring system? Do I need to buy anything additional to the tires or can they use what's already there?

Are they going on the wheels that have the TPMS in them now?

They should be able to easily tell you have them and swap the tires, no need to do anything else.

i think you just need to make sure they match your car - i believe there was a change in tpms frequency at one time (maybe 2010) for the minis

Nope, as long as they dont hit it with their bar the sensors should be ok. You may have to relearn them through the computer, but nothing special really needs to be done.

Had the same question when I bought my winter blizzaks ... Tps is with the wheels, and any competent service tech will know what to do... When u get new tires u will need to reset the warning on dash though

Okay. When I mentioned it was a MINI and had the TPMS he said that it was no big deal, just takes a little extra care is all.

I only asked because my buddy has a Cady who has the TPMS inside the stem and he was told he needs to replace those every time he got new tires... so I wanted to know if that was the case with the MINI or not.

Thanks for the feedback.

My Wheels are staying the same, just new tires, so looks like there is nothing additional besides resetting the warning light that I'll need to do.

But, that's good to know that if I ever get a second set of wheels for winter tires I need to get a new set of TPMS's?

Yep! Any set of wheels will require sensors as well. Or you coule leave them out, but You'll have an annoying light on all the time. I opted for new sensors

+1 on what kyoo said. Here some more info, just make sure if you do get the sensor , you have the right ones. There was a year split. Some R56 MINI in 2007 did not have them as they were still using the old wheel speed senors methods like Gen 1 MINIs. See link.

Also just make sure they have done them before on install and are familiar with them.

Thanks and hope that helps.

I have a '13 MINI. I'm only doing tires at this point so they can just reuse the current ones.

Ok, sounded like at first you were have another set of wheels and getting new tires and needed sensor.

When they mount the tire they just need to watch on the tire machine they don't damage the senor when the run the bead around, by using a shop ( who has done lots of wheel with sensor on the wheel) or MINI dealership you should be ok.

Thanks

Perfect. Sounds like I'm all set then. Maybe next year I'll pick up some spare wheels to throw some winter tires on but our winter is coming to a close so I'm all good now.

Many tire places will replace some of the TPMS sensor parts for a small fee (~$8 each). Thank the gubbament for mandating additional points of failure. My better-half's MINI's TPMS kept indicating a low pressure. When she got new tires, the shop found (ironically) that it was the sensor that was leaking through one of the seals. They replaced the small parts and the problem is gone.

I got new tires for my 2010 MCS a while back... ordered them from Tire Rack, and had them installed at NTB, who replaced the sensors in the process. Must be standard procedure for them.

Cheers,
