Too Many "R's"
The "R" designation started with the new MINI when released in 2002. The R comes from Rover, who was in a joint partnership with BMW to create the new MINI. Later they pulled out due to financial problems but the R stayed with the MINI.
With the brand new 2015 MINI coming the "R" is gone. Replaced with "F" and BMW designation.
The 50, 52, 53 are all numbers for particular models and engines.

Others will just state what they fit...then it is up to you to make sure you are in that range of cars that it will fit.
Not all parts are universal. In fact some vehicles within the same "R" designation may even take a different part. It depends on the build date on some parts. If you are order OEM or OEM replacement parts its always a good idea to have your VIN so you can ensure ordering accuracy.
If you're order aftermarket modification parts, you should be ok by going by the R designation for the most part. Still Year and Model designation are needed.

I guarantee you that whatever it is, it has been hashed over at least once.
I even turned in a very rare multiple error code problem that turned out to be A broken wire in an undisturbed cable bundle. The codes and error lights are listed so If someone has that same indicator, they should find a possible solution.
Another wise thing to do is visit the vendors listed in the vendor directory and peruse their catalogs so you have an idea where to go find stuff when you need it. They also have specials once in a while that are worth taking advantage of.
