Mini not getting in gear in the cold

Okay so I live in Canada and I've been in Vancouver area every winter until now. I live in western Canada now which means super cold temps. Normally my mini stays in the garage over night but I stayed with my sister and had street parking. This morning it was -27 (-16.6 F) and my mini started with some struggle. I was happy, no block heaters in these cars and the guy said "they never need them" (hah, it doesn't start below -29 buddy, last month's experience!). I let it run for 15-20 minutes, the cab was warming up, my mini was happy in first gear but rejected 2nd gear. I drove around the block in first and I parked it and got a lift to work.

2010 Camden, 65,000k - has all service up to date

Anyone else had this issue? Should I be concerned that something is wrong or maybe I am asking too much of it, the weather is really nasty?

my tranny oil gets a bit stiff under 10 deg F, i just work it through slidding from 1-2, 3-4 then 5-6 a few times loosens up, then 1/4 mile down the road no longer stiff since the oil has moved around. it goes into gear, needs a bit more muscle
