Have a 2007 stick shift Mini Cooper S and ever since I bought it I've noticed every once in a while I'll put it into 1st and start to let off the clutch and give it gas and all of a sudden it pops out, sometime it's so powerful it pops all the way out of gear and sometimes it pops out and starts grinding. It has gotten really annoying so does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening?

 

I hope I'm wrong, but in other (old) cars I would say this is a symptom of a transmission needing a rebuild.

Worth changing the fluid and looking for chunks or lots of glitter in what comes out. Who knows, it may help with the shifting, too!

 

I have a 2013 MCS, and occasionally, I've experienced the same thing, but in 6th gear. It happens when I'm shifting, pushing 3500/4000 R's. It's disconcerting.

 

Usually when this happens it could be either a linkage issue or the transmission is going out/needing rebuild. Sometimes if you drain the fluid in the trans. you can see if there is anything serious going on by looking at the fluid for metal type shavings. Usually there will be excessive amount. these are just a few things it could possible be. Not at all saying this is it. good luck!

 

Syncros are likely going bad. Change the trans fluid and that might help.

but changing the fluid isn't going to do anything if the gear is stripped. find a good tranny shop.

 

The bearings are worn allowing slop in the shafts, and the torque from the gears engaging just pushes them out of engagement. You need a complete rebuild or a new transmission.

Changing the fluid will be an unneccessary cost, I am afraid.

Are you the original owner? How many miles?

 

I'm the 2nd owner and it has 46k on it

 

Somebody must have been hard on the car, or not let it warm up properly.

 

I've not seen or heard of anyone who has either rebuilt their trans or had one rebuilt. I think the only real options at the moment are new or used ones out of a wrecked car. Its not a crazy complicated process so a good trans shop could probably source the parts but I don't know that there are published specs for things like clearances which you would need for the rebuild

Update: now it's popping out almost every single time as soon as I get to like 2k rooms and I'm taking it in to the dealer either tonight or tomorrow
