R56 2007 Cooper S Engine Malfunction
2007 Cooper S Engine Malfunction
Hello All,
I've looked through this forum to see if what I'm experiencing with my '07 has happened to anyone before, but have yet to run across this problem. I live near Cleveland Ohio and lately the weather has been extremely cold. When the temps are in the single digits and below (Fahrenheit) I am getting a yellow engine malfunction light along with a reduction in power (3k rpm max). My temporary resolution is to shut the car off and re-start it. I get full power and am on my way...that is until the RPM's drop to idle then I get a repeat of the lights and the power reduction. Repeat shut down and start up. Resume trip. This morning was a bit more hair-raising than usual since it occurred twice on a freeway while travelling about 70mph. After awhile something somewhere in the car warms up enough so that the malfunctions cease. The CEL is on, but shuts off when I'm driving back home from work. The car has a month-old battery, new plugs that were installed perhaps 4-months ago and a new valve cover after the original cracked (causing me to fail my state's emissions test). The car has over 80,000 miles on it and was purchased new. It did have a raft of issues while under warranty dealing with the timing chain and tensioner, but that was obviously quite a while ago. Oh yeah, and it also has an oil leak that sprays somewhere onto the turbo-charger, but I do keep an eye on the fluid levels. I wish Car Talk was still live. I think this would Stump the Chumps.
Thanks,
Bob

Look into moisture in the air intake freezing the throttle body. My old R56 did this when it was under warranty and they replaced the air intake with an updated one and it never did it again. It was a 07. My current R56 is an 08 and did it to me a couple of weeks ago when the temps here were below freezing. It doesn't have the upgraded intake. I let it run for a little while and restart it then it runs fine. I erased the CEL and all is good.
