RPM Jumps from 3K to 4K

Hello all,

In the past month or so I've noticed some weird behavior out of my car. 2006 Mini Cooper S with only 57K miles on it (Automatic).

Scenario 1 - Driving in D accelerating at a normal pace the RPM's spike rapidly from 3K to 4K and the car almost sounds like it's redlining. Once it hits 59-60MPH it drops back down to 3K RPM and the rest of the acceleration is normal.

Scenario 2 - Cruising on the highway at about 70+. Normally start taking the foot off the gas to slow down with traffic and when my speed drops to about 60MPH the RPMs spike again from around 3K to about 4K. When the car gets below 60MPH the RPMs drop again.

Scenario 3 - When I'm braking to stop the car, the RPM goes down to about 1K then when I'm about to come to a full a stop, the RPM spikes up and goes back down.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on. Maybe someone experienced this also and could tell me what to do. Someone told me that I could try changing my transmission fluid and that might help.

Sounds like a bad map sensor possibly? Dumping fuel or not giving enough.

Not sure though. Check your ignition as well.
