Exhaust POP…

3 month old Paceman...
I am getting some POP (not to laud) from the exhaust on sport mode when accelerating on neutral around 3,500 RPMs… this was nto happening before. I added some tips but everything is stock. It only POP when in neutral and in sports mode, not during acceleration in the street in sport mode… and the car is running great.

Is this normal? Can it be because of the new tips, maybe small gaps on the welds?
Or can this be a problem with some other thing?

Completely normal. In sport mode it will "pop & burble" when you let off the gas pedal. Should do it at all RPMs, you are probably able to just hear it better in that particular range.

thats a signature noise from sport mode. It is supposed to "pop and burble" almost like a back fire. In sport I can always get it to "pop" when I am high revving 2nd and 3rd and then using it to slow down. i.e. I am going 35-40mph in 2nd and then let off the gas to slow down.

Enjoy the noise, surprised you are only hearing it now.

You're not driving a soccer mom appliance. MINI is an iconic idea with many interesting quirks that set it apart from the rabble. Pop and burble is just one of them. On the 1st Gen S it is just there. Now you have to flip a switch to hear it but it is still part MINI motoring.

One of the best thing a MINI rookie could do would be to join a nearby club and sit at the knees of sage veterans for their insights and wisdom and when the weekend comes, go motoring with them. That is about the quickest way to become a sage veteran.

Speaking of Pop and Burble, anyone know if it is at all possible to program it into a non-S car using NCS Expert or otherwise?

Thank you for the feedback...

This is my first MINI and of all the cars I've had for the last 30 years this is the coolest of all, love it and live it.

I usually drive it like I stoled it but never actually listened to the POP before last week... It brought a big smile to my face and now I like to listen to it every day.

I think it will work in a non-S (I could be wrong)...as long as you have the sport button. I had a non-S w/ sport mode loaner last week from my dealer and I could have sworn I heard it pop in sport mode. I could be mistaken though.

As far as programming it in with NCS, unless anyone has been able to do it in the last 6 months or so, there isn't. I searched extensively for a way when I had my '08 R56S w/sport. Never was able to find a way.

Has anyone used NCS on a paceman yet? Couple features I programmed into my R56 that I'd love to have on my R61...

Then there are those of use who are extremely ticked off that they programmed the pop/gurgle OUT of the JCW, supposedly Mini's highest performance trim

My JCW Definitely pops and gurgles, it's not all the time, but I can hear it mostly when I'm holding a gear and accelerating and then letting off, like when I'm in traffic.

Seriously, you don't know what the idiotic "pop and burble" is? It's only been out since the N18 engine (2011 models). Did you not research the car before buying it?

BTW:
"I am getting some POP (not to laud)"... It's "loud".

did you not do YOUR research? the 1st gens have it. its been out for quite a lot longer than the 2011. It was only the N14 that didn't have it. You can do plenty of research on it and not know about it. I did plenty of research before buying a MINI and never heard anything of it until I actually heard it on my own car.

Thanks for "insight", I knew about the POP but my ride was not doing it before last week.
If you have any links you have research with information about this, please post so I can educate myself more.

FYI, I’ll make sure to spell check next time professor.

Even the N14 engines had pop n burble. It was removed for a bit on that engine but returned after enough complaining. Every Gen MINI has had this in the tune

My R58 S has the pop (like a super loud backfire) in sport mode but no burble. Blah. Not cool sounding like other Minis.

On the otherhand, our Countryman pops, burbles and sounds cool!
