Tire Talk

Sorry I haven't been communicating .. Just having too much fun!
I am debating whether to buy snows and wheels for the winter ... I'm tempted to stay with my regular tires and save 2,000...
My MA from New Hampshire told me that he has a number of roadster owners who do not use snows and do fine ...
Your input would be appreciated...
Also, please recommend tires/ wheels in case I go that way..
Best ,
John (JoNack)

Hi John,

We got a set of used rims and Blizzacks for Abby and they are just great! I think we paid like $900 for the whole deal from an ex-Mini guy at a show. Very much worth the price and it is great to be able to swap the tires in my own garage at will. I'm in the Denver area so the snow can be very up and down. I'm guessing we'll get walloped this year

Hi John,

I have a set of Blizzak's in my garage.

I'm going to wait till my OEM tires wear out. Then I'll put them on my stock rims and buy a set of light weight rims with a set of ultra high performance summer tires like the BF Goodrich Rivals, Yokahama AD08's or Falken RT 615k's

No issues last year with the OEM's.

Andy

Hi John,

I ran all last winter in Chicago on standard run-flats. It wasn't a bad winter, though. The stock tires seemed to do better in snow than they do in rain.

I'm in the same boat . . .

I know that on my other car snow tires have really made a huge difference from all seasons. So since I got new 17" Summer tire and wheels I have the option to keep running on all season or get a new set of tires for the 16s" and sale the RFT conti that have hardly any miles on them.

I'm really considering the Michelin-ice-xi3 but so many people are running Blizzaks I'm afraid to regret it . . . The Michelin's aren't run flat and supposedly handles much better on dry and wet which would still be a good part of the winter period here in Pittsburgh. We can get a lot of snow but maybe no more than half the season. I've also read the soft rubber on the Blizzak weras a little faster. On the other hand I've read that the Blizzak have a slight edge on snow and are RFT which can make it easier in the winter. Though admittedly all the flats by which I've been afflicted have been in the warm seasons. . . I suspect road work is to blame for nails and screws that found their ways in my tires .

I plan on getting Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 as soon as I can. They perform better than a lot of summer tires do, and they're an all season... even the Continental DW Extremes were beaten by the A/S 3

Hi Zlog - is there an article about this that you could link to? I'm thinking about new tires next year. Thanks.

My vote still goes for Michelin PSS + winter tires . . . but I understand the pros and cons

John, if you can afford the winter wheels I recommend buying them. Besides our 2013 Roadster we also own a 2008 Acura TL. We live in Minneapolis and for the first 3 winters drove the TL on the stock tires. It was ok but never felt safe in the snow. 2 years ago we sprung for a set of winter wheels from TireRack (Bridgestone Blzzaks). Now our TL handles as good, if not better, than our SUV in the snow! Our roadster is garaged in the winter so I can't speak for the difference but snow tires on our other car made a world of difference.
