My NEW GP Track Torturing
My NEW GP Track Torturing
Howdy,
Setting the MINI lap record at 300 miles on the clock...that's how you break it in lol
SO, I've had a 2008 Mini NONE S for a couple of years... it was my work horse.
I just decided to go snag me a GP while I still could and took it straight to the track.
I'm uploading more videos now
Here is my buddy driving it:
PS: It runs 6 second faster laps at MSR Cresson than a tricked out Fiat Abarth, duh.. POOR crappy driver in the SLS, he got punked by a Mini GP lol

I'm all ears...
Couple of things:
I installed the K&N intake, I had to cut part of the shroud...
I need track wheels, what should I get? OZ wheels? What do you think?
Is there an ECU flash yet for the GP?
I need a clutch/flywheel set up for my 2008 NONE S Hatchback Mini, any lighter flywheel options out there?
Here are my tires after 5 sessions:

Here are some of my toys

Being a non-track guy and won't pretend to be by playing an arm-chair driver. I have always heard smooth inputs but I see some hands movements that look pretty quick or twitchy. Is this because of the speed or is this an acceptable method of driving?

As far as track wheels are concerned, I would reach out to countryboyshane, ra2fanatic, or porthos and ask them. They track their cars often and would know the best opyions.
For the GP tune I would look up PAW motorsport. I heard they were tuning a GP and they might be able to help you out. If money isn't too much of an issue I would also recommend a new clutch/flywheel kit and a LSD. The clutch/flywheel kit would be to handle the additional power (if you're able to tune) as well as reduce the rotational mass to make the power you do have more accessible. Same story with the LSD.
Love the video by the way and I'm jealous of your garage!

I was out at MSR Cresson a couple of weeks ago running the 3.1 track. First time I've ever done it, much fun.
Maybe upgrade your intercooler before doing an ECU flash, I bought one from Helix when they were running a special.
Are you a member of the Metroplex Mini Club?

This is a little bit of chicken and egg going on. When you're pushing any car and its tires to the limits the wheel is going to move a lot. Some of the wheel movement is a consequence of the track condition. As an example, watch any in-car footage of a Formula 1 driver when touching the curbing. Those guys are world class drivers and even they sometimes are really sawing the wheel.

When the car is loaded to the max, it dances and moves around... Also, by sawing, I can reduce some of the harsh tire wear on that corners load.
Took my GP to High Plains Raceway. Video of my first lap ever at the track and in the car, so it's a little slow-got down to 2:19 by the end of the session. Got tired of messing with video and forgot to hook up the GPS, so none of the other videos started. I agree with the assessment. Next time, besides knowing how to work the video: New brake pads, they don't bite that well but they do stop this light car pretty quick. Quicker than my brain is willing to believe, especially at the end of the straight at 110 mph. Nearly impossible to get the car out of sorts. Very neutral. Kumhos are great, but they do get greasy/gooey after 6 laps or so. They won't last much longer. In addition to the brake pads have gunmetal RSe05s ordered which will drop about 5 lbs off each wheel.

Nice! I'll be taking my GP out to High Plains on Oct. 19 the for the Porche club HPDE. I've done a few lapping days there with my '05 R-53 and can't wait to try out the GP2. It may not be too late to get yourself signed up as well!
I thoroughly enjoyed the HPDE track day with the Porsche club at High Plains Raceway. They were wonderful people and put on a great event. Can't wait till the next one!
The GP was terrific. Well balanced, composed and easy to recover from the occasional slide. I think it would benefit from a bit of front camber adjustment and a mechanical limited slip instead of the electronic brake modulation. Better pads would have been good as well. The checkered flag only allowed for a half lap of cool down at the end of the session so when I pulled into the pits the front brakes were literally smoking. Not a good sign.
There was always a bit of traffic so no clean laps. Best lap was a bit over 2:16 according to Harry's Lap Timer and top speed was 116 according to Garmin.

Great feedback. I've also thought about an LSD.
I've had the same problems with limited cool down after checkered flags. A lap around the paddock usually suffices to cool down the rotors. And, actually, smoke is better than fire. I've had rubber stuck to the calipers before and that sometimes will catch fire.
Thanks for sharing!

+1 for N18 owners. Great job on the track. Can't wait to track next Friday!

Sure does. MarioKart on here has his set on 100% using 30% e85 fuel. Here's the link:

Taking Rennline pedals to High Plains Raceway tomorrow,http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrdavid...7638184606626/
also trying out the NM wheels with Yokohamas in comparison to the Kumhos on stock wheels.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrdavid...7636448492016/
NMs are 5 lbs lighter on each corner, but the tires will be a lot less sticky. Tempted to have the Kumhos put on the NMs, but I'll save that for the spring. Weather permitting I'll go back on the next open lapping day Dec 14th hoping to put different brake pads up front. Any recommendations out there?
I'll try to get some good video this time.
