Your VW sounds like a sweet car. Have you driven a MCS? This might greatly influence your decision. I just recently purchased an '02 MCS used. I have been wanting one badly for about 3 years... Just waiting for the right one to come up used at the right price. I would highly suggest searching on http://www.autotrader.com .

I don't know how long you have been following threads on NAM, but you may or may not be aware of the MINI's sometimes questionable quality issues. Most of these are insignificant annoyances. Almost anything that you come accross is covered under warranty (providing the car you purchase is still in warranty 4yr/50,000miles).

I am pleased to say my car doesn't seem to suffer from many of these annoyances, as I am sure is the case for the majority of MINI owners. I certainly haven't heard of anything that would cause one to say the MINI is unreliable. I think generally the MINI is a Very reliable car.

I am pleased with the Build quality of my MINI. You can certainly see the quality of BMW in this Car. The sound of the doors and rear hatch as you close them. The quality of the seals. Although the interior materials are nothing special (save the leatherette) the assembly is high quality.

I had thought alot about buying a GTI. Their were certainly alot more to be found at lower prices than I paid for my used MCS. For me (nothing against the GTI) I had to just make my self wait because I was just trying to settle for something I could get more immediately.

Pros:
Excellent build quality
Superior out of the box handling
Out of the box Autocrosser
Good Pick up
Great sound and addictive Super charger whine

Cons:
Straight line speed probably falls behind similar sized sports cars, coupes, and hatches
Quality control annoyances.

Hope this helps a little. If I were you. Yes Go for the MINI
