I bought my mini last week, and went to sell my old car today. One of the emissions testers over the years mis-keyed the mileage on the car, and carfax reported that there was 'a possible odometer rollback!'

I now have to prove (by documentation) that this was simply an error on the emission tester's part, and that I'm not a crook. (And instead of walking away with a check I have all this bloody mess to deal with.)

NOT fun. So this is just a head's up--pay attention to what they key in when you get your little sheet back from them. This happened two years ago, and if I didn't have documentation I'd be stuffed!

Take care,

Jeff

ps: Oh--and pass this on to your motorhead friends & get some good karma

I had the same thing happen in WA state - 1987 Ferrari - 40k miles, entered by emmisions guy as 140k. I faxed the previous year's emmisions with 38k on it and the purchase odometer statement with 38k. and they corrected it and also notified carfax.

All is now good.

But ALWAYS read anything that is official with a mileage recorded before rolling away from the site. I know I do now!

A quick follow-up.

Carfax straightened everything out in about two business days. The buyer was satisfied, I'm happy, and I am now a two-car family again.

Some notes that may help you in the same sitch:

I made copies of all service records, ordered and numbered, and faxed them the whole thing with a cover sheet outlining it.

I graphed the mileage, showing a pretty even trend with one bad spot where the guy mis-keyed. It was *really* obvious from the graph which point didn't fit in.

I did all of this because, technically I didn't have everything that Carfax claimed I would need to clear it up. When you looked at it, though, it was obvious. I have to believe that this helped speed everything along.

Ciao,

Jeff
