Why JCW?

The question was from my wife..

I'm trying to get 2013 JCW with fully loaded options...

Then it comes out to like $45k.

My wife is asking me... why wouldn't I look for another car if I'm spending that much of money?

No one will notice that my car is 45k and rather buy some BMW or Benz.

Even if you bought the car that's not fully loaded features..

You still had option to buy other cars with that money..

Why did you get the JCW?

Also, why didn't you choose the S?

Thank you

Because the JCW is classic high performance. $45k is too much. Reduce your options down to about $36k. That will make your wifee happier. PM me for ideas.

Because those other cars are not MINIs.

Not sure how to better explain it than that.

I don't care if everybody unfamiliar with MINIs thinks my JCW only cost half of what I actually paid for it. Could not care less. But when they see my smile, watch me smoothly pull away from them, and hear my pop and burble, they''ll think I'm driving a pretty damn fun "inexpensive" car. And if they don't... I still don't care.

Tell her to be glad you aren't Canadian. There's a used (2011 I think.) JCW on the lot at my local dealer, sticker is $47k.

For that price I could (and would.) get a used 335i or M3.

I like MINI but the price for a new S or JCW does open up some other interesting things, especially up here.

Ask her "why?" next time she buys a new pair of shoes that cost more than a pair of Nikes. Then run like hell.

Honestly, I really hate it when people say why not spend your money on a BMW or Benz instead... It just means you are about status or you just really care what people think of your financial standings. You buy a car because of it's value to you. I paid 37k and i could care less what people think it's worth. During that test drive, I was mind blown at how fun and different that car was. Right now I have an 08 BMW M5 and I just wanted to get the most powerful Mini available w/ warranty to help with the transition from a 500HP V10. <<<pretty unrealistic but i think you get my point. I think your wife might ask me "why would you trade an M5 for a Mini?"

My first reaction to your post is why is it important for someone to feel like people know they spent $45k on a car. Second reaction is there is no reason to option the car so high. In terms of resale high priced options don't help the price. Also the car is just as fun with basic options. Sunroof is a good resell option.

So, did you buy the M5 for status and attention, or do you just like boatloads of horsepower? Not everyone says "buy a BMW instead" because they're badge ******, it's just that a certain price point opens up a lot of other performance cars.

The way she refer that "people wouldn't know you spent 45k on a mini" says it all... It was a cheap alternative to a ferrari sound, but I was always a fan of the M5 since I saw Sabine hauling *** with one on the Nurburgring. The V10 was the reason. When I owned my STi, all i heard from the "older" generation was you paid almost 40k for that? You could've bought a BMW... I'm not arguing you can't get something else for that price. All I am saying is that you get a car that makes you happy and who cares what other's opinions are.

I don't have a JCW, but after owning my MCS for the last 18 months, I can say that while I have seen numerous Justas and MCS's on the road, I have only seen 3-4 JCWs while driving around. If I had a bigger budget at the time I had bought my car, I would've definitely bought a JCW. My MCS is not $45k (obviously), but I had family say something similar: ie., For that kind of money, you could have bough a 2-yr old BMW or Mercedes. At the end of the day, I just really wanted a MINI. Now when the time comes to sell the MCS, you can bet that I will step it up to a JCW!

Your wife would think I'm really a nut. Last fall I bought my wife a used 2011 Clubman S. automatic. It was so much fun to drive I traded in my 2005 Mercedes ML 500 that I had bought new, for a 2012 Clubman S manual 6 speed. That was so much fun I ordered a 2013 JCW right away, and traded in the 2012 Clubman S. I just chose the BRG metallic paint, chrome line interior, and H/K sound system. Then I had the dealer add temp and relative torque gauges, along with the GP2 diffusers. Grand total of the JCW was 37K and change. How much did I pay for all this trading and buying? About 58K. I suppose I could have bought a new ML 500 for that price, that would get about 12 MPG in town, and my wife would still be driving our 91 GMC pickup that gets 10 MPG in town. ( I still have the pick-up for dump trips.)

I just finished a 2000 mile trip from Cali to Colorado in the JCW. Averaged 33.5 MPG @ speeds from 65 to 100 MPH. Never had so much fun in my 74 years on the planet. Maybe I'm just an old man with too much money. Check this hot rod off my bucket list.

I don't care if someone thinks I spent $45k on my car or not (I didn't). I bought the car for us to drive, not for others to marvel over.

We had an S, we wanted something faster for use on the track. I suggested a Porsche Cayman R, but the wife wanted to stick with MINIs. So we got the JCW. I'm very happy with the JCW.

I also don't get why people want "fully loaded". I got the MINIs with every option we want, and nothing we don't. Anything more would just slow him down.

I started out with an S.

Traded for a JCW.

I liked both - for a sheer DD I would take the S.

For a toy the JCW is awesome.

I can see your wife's point. Impressions of how wisely one spends do matter in certain circumstances.

MB 250 CLA $29,900 0-62.1 in 6.7, same body as $45k AMG
BMW 128i $31,200 0-60 in 6.1, same body as $42k 135is
BMW 320i $32,250 0-60 in 7.1, same body as $45k 335i xdrive
JCW HT $30,895 0-60 in 6.2, same body as $21k Cooper

Easy, have her drive a mini s then drive a JCW.

That is all it took for me and I have never looked back, resale value, fun factor and it is a JCW.

Try building with same options through your bank (or USAA, or NADA) website...the price should be closer to invoice.

reasons:

1. I wanted the top model Mini, getting an S might cause me buyers remorse
2. I already have a Bmw and Benz at the same time

mine cost US$76,000 on this side of the world, so be happy with $45k.

I don't drive a JCW but at my much much lower price point I have been asked why I bought a used MCS over something else. I've heard it all I even would of asked why if I had never driven one but I had a set budget and chose what I felt was absolute best car I could afford in my price range. I'm not saying that a MINI is the best car for everyone but ask yourself what you want out of your car whether its performance, style, comfort of even status and whatever YOU want is okay then find the car that does what you want the best inside of your budget.

Also....

Why did you get the JCW?
I justified it because it gets twice the gas mileage as my last vehicle...and I drive a lot.

Why didn't you choose the S?
Building the S with the JCW Aero Kit would have cost ~#2,500 added on; by getting the JCW, it was standard (+ I think another option or two came with the JCW).
