Hi All,

I have a '12 ALL4. I am replacing my stock air filter. I ordered the K&N part# 33-2386 that is supposed to be the correct part however it does not fit. It is too long and slightly narrow. Which after market air filter is the best and correct for my MINI? Thanks in advance.

 

I think one of the better compromises between filter efficiency and airflow is the AFE ProDry series. You can find the AFE 31-10174 for the CMSA4 on ebay for about $50.

But for myself, I'll stick with paper. I just don't like dirt in my engine.

For what it's worth, here's a great air filter comparison by BobistheOilGuy. He took several air filters (oiled and non-oiled) and installed each one with a paper filter behind it. The idea was for the second filter to catch any dirt the first one allowed through. You won't believe the pictures after only 500 miles.

Also, it turns out AFE ProDry filters are only about 87% efficient at trapping dirt, according to page 3 of the AFE ProDry 75-80882 filter test report. A normal paper filter is 99% efficient.

Anyway, I don't mean to lecture ... I'm just addicted to information. Let us know what you do!

 

The K&N part # you would need is 33-2936.

 

As a long time biker (of the motoring type) but a new MINI owner, I find it interesting that K&N seems to have such a good reputation in the MINI world. On motorcycles, K&N filters are commonly thought of as not much better than no filter at all. Some people like the clean and reuse feature but every study that attempts to measure filter performance such as airflow and particle size usually ranks K&N at the bottom.

I have not had a need, yet, to replace the air filter in my MINI but when I do it will be most any name brand paper filter.

 

+1 for the aFe Dry Filter.

Over 17K miles and still looks new. Cleaned it at 12K but it really did not need it. Just did it so when it went in for the 1st service the tech didn't accidentally throw it away (put the stock one back in for the service).

 

+1 , You ordered the Filter for the "base engine" or Cooper version , when you need the Cooper S version .
