Timing chain parts replaced but....

Im still getting the same rattling / clunking / rocks in engine noise on cold start and its there some times at normal operating temp but softer

The timing chain, guide, rails, tensioner, sprockets etc and all the associated parts was replaced less than a week ago. When I just got the car it was fine but now its back

The noise isnt as potent as iv heard on others but its there still, you can clearly hear it when you stand in front of the engine bay and louder when the hood is open

Is this normal, should the car be like this?

Assistance would be appreciated

Model: 2009 JCW

Why don't you take it back to whoever did the work?

That would be the MINI dealer.

I would do that, but I need my car at the moment.

So there is a fault? I thought perhaps it needs time to bed in or something of the sort.

IMO it sounds like theres something wrong.. It sounds like the tensioner has loosened up...I would take it in soon...you don't want to damage something more serious...

Mine always has a very slight roughness upon first morning start, but is very smooth after about three minutes. My rule is if your engine sounds like a diesel it's a good cause for concern!

Now if there is something wrong & you keep driving the car only to damage it more is it the dealers fault or yours. Bet the dealer would think it is yours. Get the MINI back to them asap.

I will be doing that, made a booking already.

Its shocking that I have done about 150 miles and the exact same problem is back before I took the car in for it.

Is this poor service on them resolving the issue?

Sorry to revive old thread, but what was the problem? Did it just go away, or did it turn out that they left something loose and had to redo?

I ask because I'm at about 134 k miles on a mcs 2011 and am wondering how long I can go til needing timing chain replaced. I am wondering if I should replace just the top guide early as a preventive measure, like I did the timing tensioner at about 115k miles.

If you're not having troubles with the timing chain it's best to leave it alone.

Is this an N18 car or an N14 car? The N18 is a bit more robust and doesn't have much the same troubles as the N14 timing cassettes.

You have a different engine in your 2011.

Take a breath and motor on....

In the case of the OP, I bet the inlet cam gear bolt backed out after 150 miles = jump timing.
