Help

I just replace the oil pan gasket, thermo housing, and driver side axle. All fluids are good but there is now a knocking noise from the transmission that wasn't there before! Any ideas???

Why are you so sure it is the tranny? Did you check all the mounts and endlinks when putting it back together? Is the new axle in all the way?

everything's tight. the noise goes away when pressing the clutch in. i've heard stories of the bad flywheel/throw out bearing and such, but right after the repairs have been made???

a listening stick/stethoscope pointed me to the tranny directly below the driver axle.

Then it could be a coincidence IMO.

Does it only do it while rolling?

Or when stopped?

If it does it while rolling the issue is most likely the inner CV on the new axle.. Either it's damaged... Or not seated right..

Pressing the clutch in might take the stress off of it while moving under power..

If the knocking is like an angry woodpecker with a hammer.. It's the CV.

i'm thinking of taking it on a test drive just to see. but the noise happens at idle in the garage. i even took the axle back out and and the noise remained only when off the clutch

just got done with test drive. no noises when driving. only at idle when clutch isn't depressed....

hard to believe it's just coincidence, but after extensive searching i can't find any other concern then the throwout being/flywheel.

is it possible i messed something up??? i double checked all my work and i'm not dumb with wrenches. just nerve wrecking with a noise that wasn't there before all of this.

That sounds like its the flywheel indeed...

I hate Dual mass units...

I have the exact same thing going on, on mine. So whenever you go tackle it, let me know how it goes. I'm sure as hell you'll get to it first, since mines been doing it for some 10,000 miles maybe. Only have 47,000 on the clock too. WTF AGREED!!!!

All I could think as there was a noise before you replaced the axle but could not hear it over the noise from the axle.

See if you can get a video or sound clip of the noise and post it up , then we might have a better idea. Most likely it point to the throw-out bearing or flywheel from what you said.

Thanks

CONFIRMED FIX: replaced dual mass flywheel and clutch. I found the tsb for this on AllData and found the premature wear when I ripped into it. All smooth and quiet now! Thanks for the brainstorming guys

Great, Glad I could help.

Was the throw out good or did you just replace it also since its comes with the Clutch Kit ?

Damn i have this same problem with my mini. ( knocking sound only at idle with the clutch not depressed). thank you for this thread, now i know what needs to be fixed on mine. one question though, is this somthing i can drive on for awhile? what are the long term effects if i keep driving on it? im a little strapped for cash at the moment so i would need to drive on it as is for awhile.

The throw out bearing wasn't as smooth as the new one but I ALWAYS replace the throwout bearing when possible. As for driving it, I met with a few friends who are enthusiasts. Apparently two of them have been driving on it for more then a year with the symptoms. So i guess you can ride that pony till it dies!
