Lightbulb Upgraded Cat? No need for a CEL $6 fix!

Hello all!

About a year ago I upgraded to the Akrapovic Downpipe. I was told that I would have to deal with CEL's and have to clear them every 500 miles or so. I drove down to Florida to have all the work installed, and while I was down there I wanted to do a dyno test before and after. So I went to Performance Race Solutions in Sanford (great group of guys by the way) and they let me know about this little trick to avoiding a CEL. All you have to do is space out the bottom o2 sensor on the DP to fool the computer into thinking that the stock cat is slowing down the air flow! Just genius. 20k miles later and not one light has popped up. I'll attach a photo of what the o2 sensor spacer looks like on my car after a year (pretty rusty, may replace it, but it still works... You can probably coat it in some non rust something or other) and I'll also attach a photo of a new one to show what it'll look like when you buy one online or at your local auto parts store.

Hope this saves some people big $$ over the Delete-R thing and other options.

Kyle

Tried this recently on my countryman after installing the akrapovic dp and got a CEL with P0136 code as a result. For some reason this seems to work for some and not for others...

So you used 2 spacers? Looks like a different material choice needs to be looked at for corrosion resistance.

Me too. I also used a dedicated o2 spacer that was about 75% as long as two of the spark-plug non-foulers and got the same result. These o2 sensors are finicky.

I am planning to ditch the Akrapovic anyway, so no big deal at this point.

1) Why ditching it?

2) Did they change the 2012 O2 sensor size? I cannot find a 18mm defouler that will fit the sensor....

If you do ditch it, can I be 1st to purchase it?

A catless DP really shines if you can get a dyno tune or at least a custom tune to take advantage of it. Since it looks like I'll be relegated to a canned, one-size-fits-all tune, I'm not sure the Akrapovic will add much performance. If not, then it may not be worth the CEL issues and I might as well pass it on to someone who can make better use of it.

I don't believe so. My recollection is that 18mm fit for me.

Sure thing. I'll shoot you a PM if I end up pulling off the car. In the interests of full disclosure, though, the guy who originally installed it drilled a hole for a J-shaped o2 sensor bung in the hopes that it would keep the CEL off. When it proved ineffective, I had the fabricators at HG Motorsports cut the J-tube off and put a patch weld on the hole. Those guys are great welders so it came out fine and is completely air tight, but if you're looking for an aesthetically perfect downpipe, this one might not be for you!

Hujan- What tune will you be stuck with? You have an auto?

Also, for anyone who wants to use the Dorman spark plug foulers 18mm that are sold in 2 packs, you need to drill out one of them to about 0.43" in order for the O2 sensor to fit inside.

so after 2 days of no issues the P0142 code was gone, but was replaced with P0141 last night. Did the sensor die or the wires get twisted? help?
