18" or 17" Wheels, whats your take.

Hi All,

I'm looking at getting new wheels and have an awesome deal lined up for 18" Breytons. But not sure if I should jump at the offer or now. I live in New Jersey so the roads aren't the greatest at all.

What's your take on the wheel sizes? How's the ride? Reliability, etc... Right now I have the stock 16" rims. Any and all advice would help.

-Glen

17s, tires are cheaper, wheels are lighter, and less chance of bending them.

I have a set of R112 Challenge wheels in my car, and I have Bridgestone RE11 tires which I swear have saved my rims time and time again in NJ. I have no doubt another tire may have bent the wheel but the rim saving capabilities of these tires has been incredible. I think a decrease in sidewall from my 17s to and 18 would not be as successful. If you do upsize to 17s look into a tire that can protect the rims. Our roads are not great, and after a bad winter, they only get worse.

agree with Pothos. I just replaced my 17 inch wheels (websokes in case someone wants three good ones) because one was bent. we have decent roads in Alabama. I can't imagin rollling on 18's......

Well, normally, I'd say 17", but I've got a set of 18" R105s with Pirelli P-Zero run-flats waiting to go on the car this week. The roads are good here, and I believe the stiffer sidewalls of the RFs mitigate the lower profile.

The R105s were a deal I couldn't pass up. NIB wheel/tire/TPM set from MINI for $250 each. Besides, they'll be a lot easier to keep clean than my 17" R98s!

SoCal roads aren't great, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back to 18s. Prices for tires isn't horrendous as some seem to think they make a huge difference. Though I'm running 17s now for track, I do intend to order 18s again...
