Dealer Oil Change or not

I took my wifes 2012 Countryman S in for it's 1yr oil change a few months ago. Had 9,000 total miles but I changed the oil myself at 5k. Anyway when I get home I checked the oil level and it look like the oil had not been changed by the oil on the dip stick. Paper work showed low mileage oil change and they reset the computer. I always do my on oil changes and I never have seen dark color oil on a dip stick after a fresh oil / filter change. Since I truely believe they didn't change the oil / filter I did it myself the following weekend and there is no way they changed the oil due to the color of oil that came out. I figure the guy that washes cars when he's not changing oil put my 5qts of oil and filter in his car and sold it on eBay.
I'm not bashing dealers but just beware. Next time I get the 1yr oil change I'll check it before I drive off.

I only got one "free" oil change out of Mini (at nearly 19k miles due to that stupid computer), and I hated bringing it to them for that. At least, like you, if they didn't change the oil I changed it at 25k miles on my own anyway.

OP, why didn't you go back to the dealer and complain? I would've raised hell.

If the OP is anything like I am, because it's a waste of time. And what are they going to do? Give you a free oil change coupon. No thanks...

The dealer will change the oil annually or when the computer says its time to change it.

I only drive about 5000 miles a year, but the dealer changes my oil for free every May.
I'm scheduled for my last free oil change, next Monday.

I check my oil right there in the dealer's parking lot, before I leave. It has had clean oil filled right to the top each time I've brought it there.

I may not be able to relate. My mini is an 02 but don't you change oil every 3K or so? Do synthetics really go that much longer?

Yes they do. You are thinking 1970's technology. 7500-10K with synthetics depending on type of driving.

I got my first oil change around 12 or 14k. At 20k my buddy set the CBS (condition based service indicator) to show it needed oil again, got a second free oil change at 20k

The "free" oil change usually also includes software updates, other updates (coolant sensor or whateever , etc), so I think worth doing for that alone. Out of warranty I'll probably still schedule a dealer oil change once in a while just to stay on top of the technology side.

I can see your point, but don't be surprised if the "updates" they make to your computer make it even more invasive and don't lead to any improvements.
