About to purchase used 2011 all4-need ammunition for clutch issue

Im looking at an 2011 cms all4, with and 24000 miles. I'm sure it has the 2011 clutch after reviewing the maintenance history at another dealer.

Anyone know what I could do to negotiate a new 2013 clutch before purchase, or any preemptive measures I could take? I also will be servicing at my local dealer and likely dealing with them.

With the mileage on it now, and 36k coming soon, Im hesitant to buy.

Any insight into your experiences would be great, I've been through the clutch thread, but want to avoid the typical runaround that dealers are known for. Not quite sure what the protocol is for how they are handling this now, hopefully there's less friction with these claims now.

Tell them you won't buy it unless they replace the clutch, and be willing to walk if they say no. That's pretty much it. If they want the sale, they'll replace it. The hardest part is being willing to walk away from a car you want.

No way I would buy it with the old clutch. Also, make sure if they replace it it is with the new clutch. Dealers still have the old clutch in stock and you would need to make sure they are replacing with the new improved clutch.

Thanks.
Just sad that owners have to get to complete clutch failure before they are replacing them. I'm with both of you, its not a matter of it happening, but when it happens.

I was just fishing for some reassurance, hoping they are dealing with this better now. This really throws a hammer in my spokes now, I've pretty much had it dealing with car salesmen, I usually buy my cars from auctions. They only cms's showing up in auctions in my region are automatics, so guess Im stuck.

Walk away if they are not willing to replace the clutch with a 2013 version. It's a big improvement having owned both a 2011 and 2013 manual All4.

Are you buying it from a MINI dealer? I just traded my 2011 CMS All4 (which had clutch problems - but was replaced) and I believe whomever bought it receieved a 100,000 miles warranty with it since it was classified as a "certified" used MINI. You might want to ask about that.

Yeah. Theyve added free maintenance until 100k as well. Checked the history no clutch complaints, (really means nothing) just service and recalls. The dealer here seems willing to go to bat for me, I have a history with them. Well see, still want to negotiate a new one before purchase or a hefty discount.

I wouldnt buy unless they put in a new clutch or offer a large enough discount to make it worth the possible frustration. After seeing what the majority of manual S all4 pre-2013 model owners are still going through trying to get a clutch replacement, I'll say the warranty is not going to help until you have returned to the dealer 800x or reach complete failure first. Also remember the CPO selling point is 6 years 100k miles from original in service date. Find out when the original in service date was. Being its a used 2011, you are at least 2 years into that warranty, possibly 3.

Personally, if it were me, I wouldn't buy a 2011 Certified pre owned CM unless it was at least $3-4k cheaper than a used 2012 with the same features.

And honestly, you'd be better off searching dealers that have brand new left over 2012s. I just went thru this. There are several dealers with left overs. You can save 4-5k off MSRP if you are willing to drive it back or have it shipped to you at your cost.

On a new one, you'd be super lucky to get more than 2k off. So assume the best deal would be 2k off given your good relationship with the dealer.

Just food for thought.

^^^^ How is a 2012 going to be better than a 2011 in regards to clutch? The new design did not go into production until the 2013 model year.

To the OP, yes the11 and 12 clutch sucks. But if you're getting an extended warranty that includes wear items, it seems like a safe bet. Other than the clutch which is sometimes hard to get replaced, all other issues seem to have been resolved under warranty by now.

I'm saying if you are set on getting a used one you'd be better finding a left over 2012. Best deal I found was 6k off a left over...33k MSRP, full 4 year warranty in place, 20 miles driven. Best deal I found on a used 2011 with 19k miles with 3years 6 months left on the CPO, with same features was 25500. For an additional 1500, I could get a new one. In 3 years when I get rid of it, I will get more back on the 2012.

For me, it all breaks down in terms of finances. What makes more sense. Maybe you will get a better deal on the used one you are looking at.

In the end, I couldn't find the one I really wanted and wasn't willing to settle. I ordered a new one.

Well, got a 2011 with 13000 miles for a super deal (non mini dealer) Its really useless without sport mode on and its still unacceptable. Dropping it off at the dealer on tuesday, and wasting no time with this process. Wish me luck. Glad I visited the forums before I knew what I was getting into. So far no complaints with the dealer here, theyve gone to bat before. (fingers crossed)

Aside from the clutch, love it.

Anyone know if they remapped the throttle on non sport mode with the 2013 model?

Update

Got the new clutch/spring, etc put in last week. All i have to say is . The tech and service advisor at mini of charleston were exceptional. The first time around they couldnt duplicate the issue, I ended up taking the tech around the block on the second visit.

I documented the problems I had with the 2011 clutch - mostly problems starting out from being stopped. Very inconsistent. After making several reports and providing the '13 part number, my dealer took on the challenge with MINI-USA. My clutch had not 'failed' by their standard, but, as an experiment, they replaced it gratis and it made a huge difference. My understanding is that getting it replaced is not a big deal now.

I recently purchased CMALL4 from non-Mini dealer. During a test drive I noticed quite significant drive train whine. But since car was still under factory warranty and price was good, I purchased it anyway. I dropped at Mini dealer for service, figured I would need to have driveshaft or tranny serviced. Turned out they are replacing flywheel and clutch. Great!

Thank you to all the comments on this topic. I purchased a 2011 all4 about 10 days ago and had already read these posts about the clutch. Brought the car in on Monday and just picked it up an hour ago with the 2013 clutch and twinmass flywheel installed.

Thanks again.
