Audible Door Locks

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but the electrical section really was no help...

I have been reading that it is possible to tap into the gas cap lock wires and attach a pizeoelectric buzzer. I hate having to turn around to make sure my car is locked so this is something I really want to do now that the weather is nice.

So far I've removed the sidewall cover in the boot and there is a massive bundle of wires. Does anyone know which go to the gas cap solenoid?

I have done this to my CM and it works great. I'll walk down later this AM and look at the colors and tell you which one to tap into.

Cheers

I'm assuming you don't have the alarm then?

I do not have an alarm.

I forgot my flashlight so the someone verify the color combinations are correct. Here is what you do...

Fine the two wire coming from the back of the fuel door. Those are the only two wires you need to deal with. All other wires should be left untouched. If the harness in your hands has more then two wires, you have the wrong harness. If the harness in your hands has wires with different colors, you have the wrong harness.

Connect the black (-) from the "buzzer" to the brown/yellow wire
Connect the red (+) from the "buzzer" to the white/brown wire.

If you reverse the above it will beep on unlock.

Shouldn't take more the 5mins to do and you don't need to unhook anything to tap the wires.

If my colors don't agree with your car let me know and I can run back down with a flashlight and update my post.

Which buzzer did you buy? Where did you place the buzzer?

No sure of the brand but radio shack has them (Piezo buzzer) for about $8.00-9.00 (IIRC it was 12vDC @ 80db). It is actually too loud for me and needed some tape over it to dull it down some. It is as loud as any other alarm siren/buzzer.

This one should work fine. Mine is different but most Piezo sirens are about the same thing. I didn't want to wait for shipping so I just ran down to Radio Shack.

Where did you put the buzzer? I did this to my Countryman a while ago but the sound was barely noticeable on the outside. I had to stand really close to the car to hear it. I thought that I had gotten the wrong buzzer so I went to radio shack and bought every kind but there wasn't much difference.

Mine is Velcro'ed up near the back of the taillight. The tail light is quite open and seems to let the sound pass very well. It VERY noticeable and sounds as loud as any aftermarket alarm system.

Remove the black plastic vent looking thing on the drivers side of the boot(inside) . Use the location of the fuel door to help you find the two wire.

thanks I figured it out, except I tried a 70db and 96db buzzer and both are really quiet. I placed it behind the foam near the taillight, but same result.

Hmmm. I removed the vent looking thing from the driver's side and I only see this big collection of wires. Are these the wires that I use or are the 2 wires somewhere else? Thanks!

Will check wires now. But don't you need to cut the wires to splice the buzzer in?

Got the clips and this buzzer that didn't work. Back to Radio Shack to look for a different buzzer.

Thanks for posting this, I did it yesterday. When someone said it shouldn't take more than five minutes to do, I thought they were exaggerating, but sure enough, a few minutes and $7 was all it took.

Installed mine tonight. Simple but I need to get a louder alert. 75db isn't loud enough.
