K&N or AEM?

Hey guys, so im getting a cold air intake for my '10 MCS. And im looking at 2 either the AEM cai #21-699c for 303.99 ( found a sale) with the hood scoop attachment that way it makes it more useful. And the k&n intake for 279.99 with no scoop attachment. But i can't decide which one. Any reviews or opinions are greatly appreciated!

Go with the AEM intake since you have a 2010. Stay away from just the cone filter and no hood scoop attachment. You'll lose quite a few HP and no low end grunt. Good luck. You could always look at a DDM RIS too it's similar to the AEM.

Race Intake System. That's the one you want, not the DDM street intake.

I'm also looking for a true cold air intake (AEM) and don't know much about the open filter type street intake systems, my brother said get an intake that draws cold air because that's where the HP is at! I'm in California though and do not know if AEM is working on an intake that's legal in CA.

What is a Race Intake System?

I don't believe the AEM is, I believe it won't pass the SMOG test, but I could be wrong. I am planning to move to San Fran in the winter so I went with a K&N panel filter instead. Sold my DDM street intake.

A RIS, is the DDM intake, very similar to the AEM intake.

IMO i would get the DDM race intake, if you dont like it you can always sell in and get a any other intake but i think you would be satisfied with the DDM race intake.

I heard a rumor that AEM was working on an updated design to pass even California smog tests, I'll be waiting for the revised intake system.

No rumor just sit tight. They had my car for a few weeks trying some new great ideas. I can't say anymore than that. I'm getting anxious waiting myself

So what is better... AEM or the NM Hi Flow?? I know AEM is brining a Strut Bar to the market. But as for intakes... which as the best over all power gains across the chart?

as far as power gains go, you are going to see about the same gains from just about any aftermarket intake.......which is about 0-4HP at most.

most modern cars have pretty well designed stock intakes, they are honestly not super restrictive.......so any aftermarket intake is mostly going to be for looks and sound.

so as far which intake to get, simply go with the one you like at the price you can afford.

I agree. Just so many articles and comments. Hard to keep them straight. I was told by a dealer that the AEM isn't for the N14's. everywhere I read its for the 07+ MCS's. so much to read sometimes its over wellming.

How are you arriving at your HP numbers of 0-4? Fact or opinion? You're still using the stock intake and also using the AEM hood scoop, a more massive intake volume equals lots of power if done properly and AEM did exactly that! I don't buy your 0-4 HP figure, dynos equal truth.

Don't listen to everything your dealer tells you because I'm running the AEM Cold Air Intake system, it is designed for 2007-2010 MCS models. However AEM is hard at work for a hood scoop intake system for the 2011+ models!

Dont worry about the Califonia smog! I would buy which ever one you want and just keep your stock airbox. If the smog station tells you it wont pass with the intake on just put the stock on for the smog. So at worst you have to change it only once every 2 years. Most cops are not going to have you open the hood if you get pulled over unless you get caught racing.

thats the mean average from everything ive ever personally seen or credibly read.

unless someone is willing to provide independent Dynos of a car with a stock intake, and then a car with a bolted on CAI and have it show 10+ HP....im going to remain skeptical.

especially with a modern turbo/super charged car.

1) modern cars have actual engineers designing every bit of the car, and the stock intakes are honestly not that restrictive to begin with.

2) any gains you get from a freer flowing intake go almost unnoticed by the turbo/supercharger which is what is handeling all of the airflow.

im not bashing CAI.....hell, ive got one on my car.......just understand if it were really that easy to bolt on 10+ HP.....everyone would be rolling around in 400HP street rockets.
