Key Advice
Hello all,
I recently purchased a 2005 MCS from one of the Schomp dealers. I know very off Schomp Mini did not sell the car . The MINI only came with 1 non remote key. No matter what, the selling dealer would not budge on including 2 new keys. Something about them just dropping the price, oh well. Anyway here are my concerns and thoughts. Being there are 2 keys floating out there makes me nervous. I had a truck stolen about year ago so pardon my apprehension. Im not sure if I want to have the car re-keyed for new keys or get new keys that are tied to the VIN #. I don't want the keys that are floating out there being able to work the car if I do not re-key. I have heard mixed info on if you re-porgram as to if the old keys will still operate. Does anyone have any experience on either of these and are my only option the stealer?

I do believe if you want keys keyed to your MINI vin# you will have to use the dealer.
You can make a call to Peak Eurosport, ask for Ernie, he might know if this is true or has a source he can check. They do work on MINIs, all years.

Also rekeying a 1st gen MINI is $$, like $1500 I think still. The 1st gen MINIs when they were made had 10 sets of keys laser cut and programmed to the MINI. We were told when you go thru all 10 the MINI is rekeyed costing this much. We were told that in 2007, so it might have gone down or up, but a dealer is the only one that can rekey the MINI I was told.
The dealer can "void" keys stored in the car computer so that they can't start the car. Someone with an old key would be able to enter your car but not drive off. Would you be comfortable with that?
