Stoned. How much to expect?

Good sized stone flew on me from the opposite side of I-78 by Newark airport. Luckily went low and hit plastic and viper on the way. How much does it cost to replace windshield these days? I am out of warranty and don't carry collision. Shop recommendations appreciated.

In my area non-oem glass installed will run you about 150.00, not sure about the east coast.

I've had to replace two in the north east and it's over 300 dollars for each 1.

Check your insurance, they may cover it.

I've had Safelite replace the front glass in several of my cars over the years with no complaints. My insurance routes glass claims directly to them. OP says they don't have collision coverage but just fyi glass claims like this typically come under comprehensive (or a sep' glass rider) .... but if OP does not have col' unlikely they have comp'

Safelite can do the replacement in your driveway or at place of work . . no extra charge

The Magic Rock Theory

So it is your statement today, that the object in question, at a high velocity travelled 4 different paths or trajectories from the tire of a car travelling the opposite direction , jumped over a cement divider between multiple street lamp poles and sinage, ultimately striking and killing your MINI's windshield leaving an almost perfectly round impression in the glass .....

....

Speaking from personal experience, having had 5 windshields in last 9 years, it's best not to use Joe Shmo's glass service if you have a MINI dealer near by. I did that with my first two and while less expensive, in the end cost me much more.....

I have seen way too many A pillar parts flying off of MINI's due to their having been re-installed incorrectly with broken clips ( often breaking when removing them ) since they don't carry MINI clips on the truck.

With great frequency, they also break the top corner pieces of the top drip rails and either leave them somewhat loose or re-secured with 3M tape.

You can only get that small front corner piece by purchasing an entire side of drip rail too, about $80 dollars.

MINI dealers have all the clips on hand. Should they break the A pillar cover, they are responsible. Should they break off the small top piece, they are responsible.

If Joe Shmo's Glass van guy does it...your fending for yourself. My 2 cents.

I have to agree with Dave on this. Safelite will not have clips for the pillars and will basically glue the trim back on (they did that to mine). They will also try to use low end glass. I had to request PPG glass and they did put up a small fight. My only saving grace was the rain sensor on the cheap glass kept failing. 3 windshields later and they decided to go PPG.

I highly recommend that you use MINI instead and make sure it gets done right.

Many insurance companys have specific road hazard glass coverage that generally has a $100. deductable. It is worth a call to your agent.

Since the rock ding is not in the field of vision, you may want to inquire about a repair rather than a replacement. Usually insurance companies handle that expense with no out of pocket to you. Same thing happened to my son in law's subie and it was repaired. FWIW.

that looks like it needs to be replaced - repairs have to be under the size of a quarter or else they wont touch them.

also - insurance and coverage works differently with each state and carrier. make a call and hope for the best.

I have had the windshield replaced a couple times. They have glued my A- pillar back on without me knowing. I had them replaced every time after that. I just have them replaced because they will most likely break them on removal.

Also make sure they replace the top window seal. I have seen places reuse the top seal and then its not flush to the roof and then whistle like crazy.

Ask for PPG glass or OEM MINI dependent on available and good luck.

I will just say I had good luck twice with them in NY/PA. They ordered all the parts from MINI before showing up to do the work. You just need to stress this with them before they take the job.

Safelite isn't 'Joe whatever'

this is a nationwide operation ...

yes, each location is an entity on to its own but I don't think several insurance companies have partnered with them because they are fly-by-night

btw - most dealers sub contract glass replacement (and body work) so don't be surprised to see a Safelite truck parked out back (or Joe whatever)

with the work done in your driveway there is nothing stopping you from sitting there and watching everything. If you don't like what you see say 'stop' and resolution is as close as your phone . . . Safelite did not do the glass on my Element to my satisfaction one time. I called and they came back the next day, ripped it out and started over. I still had a wind whistle at 65+ so I called again, and they did it a third time. No questions asked, no extra charge. They replaced all trim clips and rubber seals with new every time. They said they would keep doing it until I was 100% satisfied. I've got no problem with that . .

Nobody said they were, we merely said that they will take the cheap route which is not what you want them to do. They will use cheap glass and they will not get the proper clips unless you push them to do so.

As for saying stop, what are you going to do when you have a piece of glass out of your car and you notice that the one they just dropped in is cheap glass that looks warped? Tell them to stop? Do you think he will drop everything to go back and get you a better piece of glass? In order to get mine done right, I had to drive to their shop and argue with the manager. Eventually it was ordered and installed correctly, but not without pressure.

The point was that if you use insurance, you can take it to MINI and get it done right the first time.

Safelite is a franchise like many other companies so quality will vary making them somewhat "Joe whatever" IMO.

As for your Element goes Capt....an old saying comes to mind....

"A job worth doing, is worth doing well".......sounds to me like their heart wasn't into it...

That was excellent case workout. How the heck you know the location? It's the same divider, overpasses, only truck on opposite side was much bigger...

It was one shot and it came from the opposite line. I was far from overpasses and there was nobody ahead to shoot anything... Wrong place at wrong time.

Crack stopped propagating but looks like @#$#@!
