Used coilovers - what to look out for?

I don't have privileges to post in the "suspension" thread so I thought I would write in here...I apologize for those that get offended by a somewhat ill-placed thread.

Anyway, my R56 is having rear tire issues and may need rear control arms replaced. I figured while that those are being replaced, I might as well add on a rear sway bar and add on some coilovers. I was able to find a set of Megan's for $500. My question is, what do I look out for buying used coilovers? Is there a tell tale sign that I should be aware of to check if the shock/springs are shot? I'm a total newbie and just would like to come in knowing that ill be getting a usable set of coilovers rather than trash.

Thanks to all!

My advice is to not buy used suspension parts. They wear and what you might be buying is trashed components. If you are willing to spend 500, save for the rest to get new.

Well yes I am selling them starting Monday. Cool thing is springs hardly ever wear out unless they are super high mileage which mine are not(15k on them). Also what else is cool you can send the Koni back to Koni and they will rebuild them when they wear out.

+1
most coilovers for the mini are pretty cheap....and you do get what you payfor...likewise. spend an extra few $$, maybe 25-50% more, and get new, and ger a warrenty, often several years or perhaps a lifetime warrenty with koni's, etc. Most folks simply do not remove and replace suspension parts till they are wornout....so getting a used part, you are paying, and shipping a suspect part, with an unknown amount of life left....

If you want new good coilovers. Your worried about spending too much, check out ST coilovers with Eibach camber plates. They go for $1250 on suspensionsource.com. Plus free shipping and a five year warranty.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll be increasing my budget a bit to get a new set of COs rather than a skeptical used set. I may have dodged a bullet with this one...thanks to all!
