R56 dealer overfilled oil
dealer overfilled oil
At my first service(12,000mi.), the dealer put in 5 quarts instead 4.4 quarts. I mentioned that the dipstick displayed overfill. The SA told me that they routinely overfill the R56S because they use a little oil. He told me that it would not cause any damage. Any opinions?
An extra 1/2 quart should not be enough to worry about, especially if there was a filter change involved. The turbo does consume a small bit of oil over the 12,000 mile service interval, although probably not 1/2 quart. I would worry if it was grossly overfilled though.
I also wouldn't worry much about it because I know that when I race my e36, the common accepted practice is to add an extra quart (bringing the total up to 8(!)).
Man, just thinking about five quart oil changes is making my wallet happy!
As an afterthought, if anything bad does come of it - the car is still under warranty. If you are worried about it, call the service manager.

Here's a fantastic article I just found about oil and the Mini R56. It's worth a read.

Yeah, it was pretty intense. I like that though!
I would pump the excess oil out. You can get a pump like JoanieB showed in the following post for less than $20. I bought mine at Advanced Auto and it came with a tube that slid down the dipstick tube. If you pump out the oil instead of loosening the drain plug, you don't ruin the crush washer. I don't believe in running the oil above the maximum level.

Hmm. My dealership was just running a special on DIY oil change kits: Two filters and 12 quarts for $100. When I asked why 12 quarts, I was told: "Five for each oil change, plus an extra quart to add oil as needed between changes."
So of course I put 5 quarts in on that advice. Now all I can think about is foamy engine oil.
