R50/53 Are keys transferable?
Are keys transferable?
Sadly my 2002 MCS was rear ended and totaled. I have a valet key, a brand new unprogramed remote key and a brand new full sized valet key.
Are they useless?
Are they useless?
Sorry to hear.
Unless you pull the DME, the keys will be relatively useless. I suppose you could hold onto them and swap the immobilizer chip and key blank, then reprogram the key to the door, but that's a bit of work, and would only really be helpful if the old key body became mangled somehow.

Thanks Eric, you have always been a great help on this forum. I love this place, I'll miss it.
The other party, a 3/4 ton diesel truck, was at fault and so his insurance company salvaged the car. It was all rear end damage, and could fixed back to new, but the cost of repairs was ? 2/3 the value of the car so even if I wanted to have them make the repairs, it would be a salvaged title.
So I took the settlement.
The insurance co. Owns the car, sure wish I could have taken it with me!
Guess I'll send the extra keys to the insurance company.. A shame, since I paid a lot of cash for them.
Pennies compared to my investment, and then the intangibles...sigh..

How about pictures here or in that wrecked MINI thread. And yes, you probably should send the keys along so they stay with the car. If somebody buys and rebuilds it, they'll need the keys. Lots of people (my wife included) seem to get a car with only one key.
