Who Farted?

'08 R56S (stock) w/ 67k miles

I find that when I get on the highway after a cold start, as soon as I slow down/ get off the highway, it smells like someone Farted! rather embarrassing when I take someone out to lunch from work, like my boss… or his wife… HA… almost as soon as I get to the first traffic light, it smells.

I have recently, but after noticing the smell;
- upgraded to the waste gate spring from Alta
- DIY the intercooler muffler delete
- disconnected the "noisemaker" from the firewall

what am I to do?!?!

Is it similar to the the smell of diesel exhaust?
I get it too, randomly, usually after heavy acceleration and hard gear changes.
But, I have an '05 R50.
Other weird smells I get:
-Candle wax,
-Oil (but that's cus I have some drips)

Maybe check your cabin air filter. I replaced mine last year because of a moldy smell with the AC - which I still get when I first turn the AC on, and then again when I turn it off.

Is it a sulfur smell? Could be a bad cat...

Sometime a gas station will get a batch of gas that is high in sulfur. You could try and switch your brand of gasoline for a couple of tanks and see if the smell goes away.

No Oil stain for me, My oil just squeezes out and burns off on the outside of the engine under heavy acceleration.

Wouldn't an exhaust leak north of the cat cause the same smell? A catless dp can be more trouble than fun depending on where you live. and too many CEL's especially for a 2nd gen.

Could be mold or mildew in the a/c intake if you have your air on recycle all the time , that can happen.

Gassing from a battery (hydrogen sulfide) will smell like rotten eggs,

If batt's up front, grille duct will pick it up, if in back it will come from hatch area.

Excessive gassing usually a sign batt is failing and or being over-charged.
(even the maint free gel types that have no vents still have an over-pressure vent that will release hydrogen and other when necessary).

Bet you a beer its your micro filter. That's the first symptom of the in-cabin heat/ac/HEPA filter going bad, is a sour smell.

Your dealership can replace this in the neighborhood of $87 and ask them to run a treatment of frigi-fresh through the vents. Its an antibacterial spray that will clean up any residual odor/mildew - we usually do not charge for this service if they are paying out of pocket for the filter.

$87?
I did it myself in 5 minutes, no tools, and a $25 filter from Canadian tire.

I kind of like the battery gas guess. It is really open behind the battery and a poor cabin filter could let about any smell through. I also like the AC drain vent being clogged, full of nasty water with no where to go. Stop and go sloshes the mess around.

2 tanks later from 2 different stations and different brands each, still smells like ****! i think the issue is from either the cabin filter or the oil leaking onto my turbo...
