R50/53 optimal placement of cone air filter?
optimal placement of cone air filter?
Greetings. I recently removed my stock flat pad air filter to find it in horrible condition. I picked up a cone air filter & a flat pad air filter. I'm currently using the cone air filter for now, but I want to know what's the optimal placement for it? I know some people frown upon cone air filters, but I personally want to compair it with the flat pad and choose one to use in the long run.
My current placement of the air filter is where the stock airbox used to be:
Something like this -

I have been browsing a thread from many years ago, the poster has his mounted like this:

Basically he removed the pipes and airbox and attached the filter directly onto the throttle body

My question is, which is the better placement? And also, will the pipe that runs from the throttle body to the airbox, where the stock air filter used to be, just pull off or is there some dark secret to it?
I've tried pulling it off, diddnt budge. Thanks.

My personal opinion would be to keep the box and tubing. Not sure about how much it matters but I would be concerned about having the air filter exposed to so much of the outside world by not having it enclosed. With the hood scoop near to it I'm not sure how much debris or water may get to it. I really doubt there is much (if any) of an increase in efficiency or power.
Putting it in the box makes a cold air intake...
running it without a box is technically a hot air intake...
Cold air makes more hp...but folks find the hai is simpler to install, and can sometimes give slightly better throttle response....much debate over the years, but imo, heat is bad, so shield the filter, duct air to it, and enjoy. Kinda like oem plus imo. Heck my afterrmarket filter kit sits in half the reused oem filter box with an different cover, and a cone filter, and some extra ducting to let it more cool air, and to keep it setperate from the hot underbay air....
Running it as a bare cone is simple...some like the look....easy and cheap...slightly more sound too.
