Service engine lite with codes, P0455, P0172
Hi all,
Hope y'all can help me out as in the past. Can always count on this forum for great info. Car is my daughter's '03 R50, CVT tranny, approaching 114K miles.
Had been seeing the P0455 Evap control system leak (large) for a few weeks accompanied by the "Check filler cap" lite. It's tight, but thought maybe the seal has gone bad. Planned on getting a new one. Car continued to run fine.
Yesterday after fueling, car wouldnt start. Finally was able to get her going by pumping the gas pedal. Feathered the gas slightly to keep it running. Seemed to be in "limp" mode as I drove it back home by lightly stepping on the gas pedal.
Pulled the codes and found the P0172 "system too rich Bank 1"
I've read about injectors, O2 sensors, but not sure which way to go on this one. Can anyone offer any advice?
One note - I started seeing the P0455 right after I replaced the serp. belt and removing/replacing the vacuum lines that meet at the sensor mounted on a bracket right above the idler pulley.
Hoping for help ......

Let me check my book on this one tomorrow- we were getting a code with a similar description- P2097- and were advised by our independent mechanic to replace the plugs, wires and coil pack because the spark was so weak to cylinder 1, and because the OEM coil pack develops corrosion on the #1 terminal. That's an idea, but I will check my book tomorrow when I get home from work (it's sleepy time in a few minutes).
Yay for R50's!

Thanks for the codes. Not really much to go on there. I hate the Mini service dept near me since they tried to tell me my CVT was gone last year and it should be replaced. I changed plugs and wires and the car ran like brandy new.
Checked the wires, and coil connections, and all are good. I put a small amount of grease on them when I replaced them earlier in the year.
Ive noticed that on initial startup and driving the motor runs fine. I only drove it 5 mins or so, but am I right in saying that the computer emissions controls do not kick in until the motor has reached normal operating temp?
I'm really thinking of taking a shot and replacing the O2 sensor. A hundred bux just might fix the problem.
Bugs me though that I started seing the "check filler cap" lite after I did some work and left off the vacuum lines to the solenoid when I tried cranking it up the first time.

PO172 2012 Countryman S
This past December, the engine light came on (10K miles). Before I could get a new OBD2 reader plugged in ( 2 days) the light went out. It always ran fine so I figured it just a fluke. It came back in early February and stayed on with the PO172 code. Got it to the dealership and they did there diagnostic thing and replaced all 4 injectors. 200+ miles since and no issues. It always ran great but mileage has seemed to increase. Will no better with next fill up. MINI of BURLINGTON (Vermont) is a super dealership. They gave us a new Paceman S for a loaner as they had to order the required parts, install and thoroughly test. We had the Paceman for three days, but we prefer the Countryman. (that's why we bought it to begin with). Same power, better
seating and better ride.
