Buy different brake pads. Any brake shop can install pads that do not produce as much break dust. The only problem I have with the Dust covers is that they make your wheel look like a hub cap. I really like the look of an exposed disc and calipper <SP>. One other thing, the open airness of the wheels probably makes for a cooler disc while driving hard. The cover could trap in heat.

Cheers

I agree. Nothing could look worse than a car that has hubcaps. While MINI doesn't, brake covers make it look that way. I suggest going down to your local automotive store and finding some spray and rinse wheel cleaner. The stuff works great, especially if you clean your wheels with a wheel brush. But even just a quick spray will remove most brake dust and grime. I use Meguiars myself.

Dust Covers will affect heat dissipation for the rotors. Mini was designed so that air flow comes through the wheels from under the car to cool the rotors. I asked Mini about the same topic and they told, "Don't Do it, you'll warp your rotors under hard braking"

I believe the little clear sticker on the wind screen (that we all rip off) has some verbage about dust shields (plus other after market add-ons) and invalidating the warranty. Something to check if you care about that sort of thing. And ... I would agree, makes the car look like a 1:1 Bburago.

unless your added on/modified part DIRECTLY causes the damage, your warranty is fine.. and even if it does cause the problem, you only voided it on that component, not the whole car...

The little sticker in the windshield specifically mentions brake dust shields as voiding the warranty. I'm sure if the engine fell out and your car had the shields, the dealer couldn't legally refuse to fix the engine. But I agree that they would look terrible, and could affect the rotor cooling.
I've had really good luck with ceramic pads. they are pricey, but do not create much dust, last longer, are better for your rotors and also never become noisy.
