Bov...bov....bov....

Right now i have a Helix (turbosmart type 1) BOV on my car along with a DDMworks street intake... The BOV is weird, first you hear a slight "tssss" from the original derv valve, and then the BOV kicks in with a loud PSHH that lasts only a split second. The BOV also doesnt kick in unless im at about 4k RPM, at other times its just the stock valve.

I have a friend that has a universal HKS SSQ that he took off of his Subie after he sold it, he says it mounts differently than the other BOV that are made for minis, and that it will work differently, is this true? Do these BOV work on minis? Ive heard that at some time they will throw CEL.

I bought a BOV because i like the PSH sound, but its not very loud or even noticable from outside of the cabin, i want it to sound noticable, I also have a buddy with an Evo X, his BOV sounds amazing compared to mine, it doesnt sound like a step from the original valve and then to the BOV.

Anyone can help?? This is all so confusing to me.

A blow-off valve that vents to atmosphere shouldn't be used on the R56 platform.
Why? Because the engine is designed to be a closed-loop boost system, where the unused pressure is diverted back into the intake tract.
When you vent to atmosphere, the engine typically runs too rich (since the ECU thinks the air is still in the system) and a CEL occurs.

Grab an upgraded diverter valve for the vehicle and stick with such.

Thanks for the input, what do you know about the Forge motorsports dump valve? I think it's like 229 dollars. Will I get a better boost response? Are the sounds noticeable?

I have the Forge diverter valve on my car. Not that stupid vent to atmosphere sandwich adapter they sell. It makes about the same amount of noise as the stock diverter valve. I think the valve is most noticeable if you have a tuned car. The boost response is a little quicker with it. I mainly wanted to get rid of the OEM diverter valve because of it's cheap plastic construction that's known to fail over time.

Thanks, from the videos I've seen the forge div valve makes a good bit of noise and a sort of flutter, are these the same valves you're running?

I still don't understand how the BOV that I have on my car now works, it doesn't even replace the div valve, the air is still recirculated because you can hear it in the air box. The BOV is mounted in the back by the throttle body, I don't understand

You may find that with a CAI and the removal of that boost tube muffler it makes quite a bit more noise

Agreed, I bought the k&n intake ad te difference was crazy, much more than I had expected. Friends thought I had installed a BOV and were surprised when I said it was only an intake

The bov's you're talking about mount on the Air Charge side. I had the Turbosmart for a while, then the HKS, and now I'm on the Forge Diverter Valve (not the sandwich plate). Eventually a vta bov will cause CEL's, which I refused to accept for a long time since I loved the bov noise. Every once in a while I'll put the HKS back on for kicks and giggles, but for track use going back to full recirc is a must. If you're going to buy the HKS, you're going to have to get a custom pipe made to mount it on. It will replace the upper 2/3 of your air charge pipe (the passenger side of the airbox). Mine was custom made by HKS in Japan.

If you are going CAI for both the awesome sound and true cold air, go Defenders of Speed.

Do you not like the sounds of the forge diverter valve? By the looks of the videos I've seen it seems louder than the BOV's. cooler sound + more efficiency seems nice to me so I'm willing to give forge a shot. I would link you to the videos ive seen of the diverter aounds but I cant off of my phone. And to the guys talking about CAI I'm running a modded DDM works intake

OK, i think the original poster may be confused to what the difference is between a diverter valve (DV) and a blow off valve (BOV). The two terms get thrown around like there is no difference when there is a fundamental difference in their operation.

The N14/N18 engines are equipped with a DV. When commanded by the ECU, a solenoid activates opening a plunger that releases boost pressure back to the turbo intake. This way no unmetered air escapes and your ECU will be happy. I have the Forge diverter valve on my R56. It works fantastic for a high boost application. http://www.waymotorworks.com/forge-blow-off-valve.html .

A BOV is a vent-to-atmosphere valve that vents excess boost pressure to the air. These are the valves you want to stay away from on the 2nd generation MINIs that still demand ECU control over the boost control. When you release unmetered air to the atmosphere you will eventually get a check engine light and torque derate. They are not worth the money on our cars unless you are planning to run a larger aftermarket turbo like a GT28 that does not have a DV.

Examples:
HKS SSQV
Greddy BOV
Turbosmart Stage 1

I admit I like the "pssh" sounds of vent to atmosphere BOVs, but for the MINI R56 and the performance headaches it causes during daily driving and at the track, stay farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr away

I'm not the best person to tell you about the Forge DV sound. What I can say is the majority of the videos out there online are of the Forge sandwich plate (which vents to atmosphere) not the Diverter Valve itself. I've been asking around, to countryboyshane and others, about the Forge Diverter Valve because mine barely makes any noise at all. I'm still not completely sure I don't have a faulty one. I hear a very very faint air release noise, a tiny bit louder under full boost. Mine's definitely quieter than the stock dv was though...hence my occasional need to throw the HKS back on there for kicks.
