New Mini Owner..2 Noise Questions

I did a quick search but...I just want to ask anyways. I have an 05 MCS and its making 2 weird noises that my dealer I just bought it from say is perfectly "normal"...I just want a second opinion lol

1st: When first starting the car (manual of course) I hear the clutch "chatter or clatter a bit"...sounds like the plates of the clutch..almost like a dual clutch. When I engage the clutch it goes away so its not a supercharger clatter...at least thats what I think. The dealer says its normal for the 05's to do this..it goes away after the car is warmed up...or at least is much quiter. What do you think ?

2nd: I get a "whine"..not a supercharger whine but steering whine...dealer again says its normal...said the power steering in the coops whines a bit...fluid is full and has been changed.

What do you think ? Car is an 05 with 56k on it and runs great as far as I can tell..smooth and tight..

Thanks,

The power steering does whine. I don't have any clutch clatter on my 06.

+1 on this entire post.

Could be the throwout bearing in the clutch...I'd make the dealer tear it apart on their dime.

My clutch makes that same noise. It's likely the throw out bearing. The power steering whine is completely normal.
Speaking of rattles I get a phantom rattle that only appears when it is around 35-50 degrees outside. It's somewhere in the front left of the car. But that's another post for another day...

yes on PS whine. how "loud" is it tho? if you notice it gets louder at some point, take it in. mine had leaky lines, but at that point, it was quite loud.

no on clutch chatter. happens only at startup? not btwn gears? while cruising, or only at stop? not the chewbacca noise right?

i believe it may be the "chewbacca" noise we are speaking of...cant hear it around town..loudest at start up from cold ...goes away right after engaging clutch and is not heard again.

did more research and it could be the TSB on Flywheels that i have been reading about. Just talked to my Mini dealer and they will take a look at it...now I just gotta wait.

The ps whine is normal...
The ps sound on my early production 2005 is basicly very quiet...compared to older cars anyway...in 2005, the pump was modified to be a bit more quiet, but not silent...
The startup sound...don't have that, but chewbaca sound is the sound the dual mass flywheel makes when it is kinda sticky (the gel counterweights anyway). Other than beaing annoying, you can usually ignore it....it is not a relilibility issue, but if you can get it swapped, and get a fresh clutch...might be a great idea...the dual mass flywheel is $$$, so some folks elect to get a std flywheel when they do a clutch...about 1/4-1/6 the cost, but can add a bit of noise and vibration.
Like i said, don't have either on my 2005, but know pleanty of folks that have cars that do.....
