Anyone here a fan of Steam Railroads?

Mark has collected the entire Dragon’s weekend agenda at https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/dragon/.

Guess what – NOTHING IS HAPPENING ON SUNDAY, May 2nd.

So here is an idea I floated to the Balto/Wash area folks. How about Steam Powered MINI Excursion. Take a look at the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad website. Then click on the Schedules/Fares button and take a look at the Tuckasegee River Excursion.

So the idea is to get a MINI group together for the Sunday excursion leaving Dillsboro at 1 PM for a 4 hour trip. Dillsboro is about 50 miles on NC28/US19/US74 from the Fontana. After just floating the idea in this area, I got 8-10 people who indicated an interest. If we can get 20, then we get a small (like 10%) group discount.

The GSMR people indicate that tickets should be reserved at least 7 days in advance. So let me make this offer: If people are interested, we will go ahead and make the group reservation. Please let me know NLT April 20th. PM is fine at w3iwi@toad.net

Regards, Tom & Elizabeth

Tom, I would suggest that you start a list here on the thread of who has PMd you or who has stated here that they want to attend.

I want to ride the train! Put me on the list. Please list the exact location, and all the info again for those just noticing this thread. Thanks!

Clover -- Good idea.

Here is what I have listed so far:

W3IWI (2A = Tom & Elizabeth)
MiniClo (1A = Clover)
Tom Spray (5A, 2C)
Lanmind11 (4A = Del & Laura & 2 from Fla)
MegaPopstar (2A = Ron & Vanessa)
MBabischkin (2A = Michael & Patricia & baby David should ride free)

Depending on how they count the two "C"s, that gives us 16-18. Supposedly group rate sets in at 20 and we get a discount from A = Adult = $41, C=Child ($20),

My plan is that we will make the reservations for all on the honor system, and then collect when we get there.

Take a look at the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad website. Then click on the Schedules/Fares button and take a look at the Tuckasegee River Excursion.

The train leaves at 1 PM from Dillsboro for a 4+ hour trip. Dillsboro is about 50 miles from the Fontana -- the route is NC28/US19/US74 .

Regards -- Tom

To the previous list :
>>W3IWI (2A = Tom & Elizabeth from MD)
>>MiniClo (1A = Clover coming all the way from CA)
>>Tom Spray (5A, 2C)
>>Lanmind11 (4A = Del & Laura & 2 from Fla)
>>MegaPopstar (2A = Ron & Vanessa from DE)
>>MBabischkin (2A = Michael & Patricia & baby David makes three, from VA)
Today we added

>>AZWilliam (2A, coming from AZ)
>>koolmini (2A from NYC)

with these additions we should have no problem getting the group discount.

Thanks to all -- Tom (email = w3iwi@toad.net )

Today I ordered 20 tickets for the steam train to get the meager 10% discount (18 cost the same as 20!).

Here is the list I have as of today:

Which adds up to 18, which means we still have two seats left. Is anyone else interested? Please try to dredge up a couple of more interested people to use the two extra tickets.

I got us all seats in the open-air (which also means you may have to eat some cinders, but that’s the purpose of riding a steam train!). I have assumed that the weather will be superb.

You need to show up at the train station in Dillsboro NLT 12:30 on Sunday to claim your tickets and board the train at 12:45. The group name is (no surprise) “Mini Cooper”. You should be back in Dillsboro about 5 PM.

You are on your own for Lunch/food. There are eateries in Dillsboro and at the half-way point in Bryson City.

Let me know if there are any questions – Email to w3iwi@toad.net.

    Tom
