Just curious about MPG
I have a 2006 Cooper S with a 6 speed manual trans and I am getting about 30 MPG instant (according to the display) on the highway at about 65-70 MPH. Is this about what everyone else has been getting?
I am looking to get a little better milage, as I drive 100 miles everyday round trip for work, but I still want good performance. Any suggestions out there?

I usually get about 30 mpg combination highway/city but lately I have been getting 32, the mileage estimate on the car says I am averaging 38.5 mpg. I have a 03 S with the JCW package. The best I have seen is 34 mpg. This is the average for each tank. I write the mileage and gallons in a book. Its **** but its something I do with all my vehicles.
Thanks everyone, I was thinking I was not getting what I supposed to, but I was comparing it to the second gen turbo models. Looks like 30 is about the norm to expect. Thanks again.
I get about 28-29 mixed city and highway. FWIW, I got better gas mileage with the Alta Intake and better again with the Invidia Cat back, I saw up to 35 on the highway. But that was long ago haha since then I've done a few things that negatively affected MPG's... just a few
I got between 29 &33 mixed before I got my 15% pulley and coilovers on. My commute is now <10mi all city and I've been getting 24-26...which I can't really complain about.

I have been getting around 36 ave. My commute is 80 miles a day mostly highway. I did see a jump of 2mpg after changing my air filter which was dirty. Overall I think it's pretty good gas mileage. I know there are cars getting way over that now but they aren't even close to being as fun as my Mini is to drive.

I drove 55mph to and from The Bronx starting in Atlantic city to see how well the MPG were. The car is an automatic, and using a few hyper mile techniques, i achieved 430 miles before needing to fill up. If what the net says is true, and the fuel tank is 13.2 gallons, I achieved about 32.6 mpg, but I feel it's 14 gallons, so I'd still be looking at 30.7 mpg....can't beat that with a supercharged engine.
However, the way my wife drives, she would average about 270 miles to the tank, averaging either 20.5 or 19.3 mpg. She has a bit of a lead foot :D

About 28-30 mpg hwy is what to expect on a gen1 mini...fun, but not very efficent.
carefuly buying low rolling resistance tires, and slowing down a bit can help....keep in mind many high performance tires and snow tires do reduce mpg...but some can get you about a half mpg differance, best to worst. And remember tire/rim weight matter, as does the width...
but for a highway cruiser, a gen2 or just-a cooper is always going to beat a gen1 s....but not as much of a drivers cars...

'03 base 5-speed
I average about 32. Best I'd gotten was 33 until last week. I got 36 :D It all depends on how you drive.
I know people on here hate when I mention this, but I coast in neutral whenever I can. My husband did a test last weekend, where he ONLY coasted in gear in his '04 base 5-speed, and he only got 30mpg, whereas he averages 35mpg when he coasts in neutral.
Again, it's all in how you drive.

It's where you use certain techniques while driving to save fuel, such as coasting in neutral, driving a certain speed, and reduce the amount of stopping and accelerating. Some people take it to seriously, namely the Prius guys, and do things such as drafting right behind a large truck to reduce drag, driving under the speed limit in a dangerous manner, and over filling their tires to reduce friction of the tires. There are tech articles out there, but pick and choose, and make sure they are safe.
Yup....
tailgaing a large truck is pretty dangerous....all those black streaks on the highway comes from brake lockups....trucks use compressed air...and if a leak devolps....the brakes come on 100%...
that and if a tire and the cap or recap comes appart....the "gator" flies back about 50 feet...could kill ya!!

I managed to get 35 mpg US (6.7l/100km) on an all highway trip at around 110kph. This with an auto Cabrio with the top up for most of the way. I used cruise pretty much all the time and was careful with acceleration and avoiding slowing down as much as possible and no A/C usuage. No truck drafting, but you do still get some benefit when you are several car lengths back. Stopped twice over 7 hours and had heavy traffic for about 40 miles but not stop and go.
I gave the car a complete going over when I got it, oil, plugs and wires, belt, air filter, tranny fluid and pumped up the tires to 35 psi. The car is all stock.

I get 40mpg highway and overall average of 30-35 mpg combined(depends on week and my right foot)
Start with allowing engine to breathe correctly(clean air filter!), Synthetic oil(5w40), fresh spark plugs and a new wheelset.
Wheelset:
Lightweight 15" wheels(i am using factory non-S 8spoke alloy)
175/65-15 tires
This is my commuter wheelset
For track I use 205/50-15
For AutoX I use same as track or 225/45-15
