My wife's rear-ended justa

No point of this thread. Just posting pic of my wife's rear-ended justa. She got hit on the freeway doing around 10-15 mph. Airbags didn't go off. Spare tire broke off and was left on the freeway LOL. Bodyshop said $6K+ in damages and 3 weeks to repair. The hatch can't be repaired, so it will be replaced. The rear passenger fender buckled a little, so the body will have to be pulled/straightened. My wife doesn't know what hit her (hit and run), but it was a recent model Toyota by the emblem imprint LOL.

Dang. So sorry. Almost looks like the license plate number is embedded in your tailgate...

How does someone rear end you on the freeway doing 10mph then drive away? The only reason you'd be driving that slow is because of heavy traffic in which case there wouldn't be anywhere for them to go.

Sorry to hear about your wife's accident. I don't know if you've already done so, but you should report this to the police. They take hit-and-runs very seriously... especially since it looks like it might have a copy of their plates. Good luck with it all!!

Very sorry to hear about the accident but glad that your wife is ok!

I agree that you need to file a police report (required by CA law in this instance) and I believe that the estimate seems a bit high, unless you've worked with the body shop in question and their work aligns with your quality requirements.

And remember, don't let your insurance company push you around!

thanks for the kind words everyone.

the car got hit in rush hour traffic on the freeway. after the accident my wife didn't get out, rather started to move over to the shoulder assuming the other person would too. the other driver took off once my wife got out of the way. i would've got out of the car in the middle of the freeway, but she thought it was unsafe. I wasn't there.

filed a police report, but there's nothing that can be done to find the person. we have AAA insurance and we took it to a bodyshop we've previously been too. btw, i recommend this place, Platinum Coachworks in Covina Calif if you need insurance work done. they're expensive (hence go if insurance is paying) but they're a factory certified collision repair shop for VW, Audi, and Mercedes.

I would suggest you give your rear bumper cover to the police, they should be able to determine that truck.

the accident happened at night so my wife didn't even see the type or color of the car that hit her. she didn't bother looking because she assumed the person would pull over like her (quite naive ). i think it was a car instead of a truck. theres an imprint of the car's license plate frame, but not the plate itself. the officer who took the report and AAA said there's not enough info to find the person. we're stuck with the $500 deductible.

Lesson of this story: if someone rear ends you, get out of the car immediately and take down the license plate and make/model of the car (if not pictures).

This situation also happened to a friend years ago. Got rear ended on the freeway. Moved over and the other driver took off.

Just got the car back. Took a little over 2 weeks to repair. Looks good as new. Below are the itemized repair costs FYI. My insurance (AAA) covered all but the $500 deductible (total bill around $6900). Looks like everything was replaced with new parts, except the spare tire and assembly.

Few notes the bodyshop mentioned about the repair:
  • BMW/Mini does not sell partial body panels like door skins, so you would have to buy a full door assembly. Thats why they replaced the entire rear gate (re-used glass and trim pieces).
  • BMW/Mini requires a specific frame repair machine. Since they are a factory authorized Mercedes and Audi repair facility, they luckily have that machine.

The body shop is approved by Mercedes and Audi.
