Did you leave stability & traction control on? I autocrossed in my S yesterday and had major issues with traction.
However, I was on stock all-season run flats, the track was damp in the morning, and there were extreme elevation changes.

Traction and DSC off, much more fun with all those off. That video is with an H-sport Competition bar on medium. I am going to finish the year on medium and consider going to full stiff on the bar next year. That inside tire would come off the ground by 4 inches or more. I am running the stock Dunlop sport summer tires. I will probably run Michelin Pilot super sports after these where out.
You won't tear up your DD! You will go through tires a lot faster, brakes a little faster, and then need bushings, tie rods and other suspension parts sooner than you normally would. Other than that its not that hard on a car.
You make it as hard on your car as you want. If your the type that launches at 4000 RPM and spins your wheels all the way to the first turn then sure its going to get expensive, but it does not take that and from what I have seen the guys who do that put up really bad times as they suck everywhere on the course.
Sporty launch at about 2000+ rpm and once into second gear thats usually the last shift you make unless there is a possible shift to third, or a really tight turn. With my JCW when I launch in that range I am already breaking my tires loose so I don't understand why people have to drop their clutches. I guess with a lower powered cooper you might need to... I am doing pretty well so far and this is my first year doing it. Of the last three events I have been at I have placed first in my class and 7th overall with 50+ cars at the event.

Heres another from this past Sunday. The mini represents well... 5th overall out of 30 club member entrants. Next year will be my first full year and I think I will do pretty well...
