Electrical Does the Power Steering cooling fan run all the time ?
Does the Power Steering cooling fan run all the time ?
Can anyone post a reply: Does the Power Steering cooling fan run any time the car is turned on, or does it have a certain temp it turns on until its cooled down ?

Would it help for it to run all the time ???
to hopefully save the pump motor ???

It tums "when needed" as determined by the computer.....and when the radiator fan is running on hi.
wish it was more definitive, but thats it. One way to think about it is the cars movement should get the ps pump airflow....and the fan is set up to run when airflow is minimal, such as a very hot car in stop and go driving, or a very hot motor when it is radiating heat....
the fan is not very big....and in comparison to the amount of air the ps pump would see from a moving car, not much, but enough in a hot low airflow situations....if it works.
I guess tye little fan, at about $200 is mot cheap, but cheaper than a pump, but both have duty limits/temp limits...you could hotwire the fan to a switched dc scource, but most failed ps pumps have a failed fan.....so watch the fan, and/or extented its life (i got the oem fan duct kit to keep grit/crap out of it), and it will do its job, and cool the pump when needed....an engineer desgined it to work one way...i just try to make sure it CAN work as desgined. That having been said, ANY DC MOTOR, just like the alternator is a limited life item due to wear, and the electronics....so it still may fail someday....
