brake rotors

I am using mini 294mm (11.6 inches) rotors on my racing ford festiva (long story), and it seems like the Wagner BD180027 ($46 on amazon) are not really good - they have warped right away.

Called a dealer and got a $146 per rotor quote for OEM. So, my question - do we know any quality after-marker rotors for under $100 each?

PS: they told me there are two different part numbers - before 06/07 and after, both 294mm. What is the difference between them? Actually, which minis use these 294 rotors and which do not? Are there any larger stock rotors on other mini trims/years?

centric premium rotors are good and cheap.

i am not sure of the difference for the rotors before 06/07, they may have different size lug bolt holes.

Gen1 Mini with the JCW brake package used the 294 rotors. All Gen2 Mini Cooper S use the 294 rotors as well.

So, any 2008 Cooper S would be 294mm?
What about 2008 JCW - does it use the same rotor, or a larger one?

2007 and later JCW use a larger rotor with a brembo caliper. I don't know the size but it's a good bit larger than 294mm.

R56 Factory JCWs use 12.4" rotors but they really started to be imported into the US for MY 2009.

JCW for 2007-08 generally are dealer installed stage 1 with the performance kit and unless the brakes are upgraded separately, they will be the stock MCS rotors with 294 mm rotors.

Btw, I bought 294 mm OEM rotors a couple of years back for $90 each.

Also, as mentioned, centric does make a decent rotor for the price. I like their premium version.

Centric also has high carbon models.

Or, better yet, the cryo treated model:

Centric!

Not sure, but I believe that the 1st gen JCW's run the same brakes as a standard 2nd gen S model.

I've got Powerslot which is made by Centric. Centric is good quality product at a none premium price.

Correct! I got frst gen JCW brakes on my MCS. I measure the rotors and they are exactly the same.

i'm needing to change the rotors and brakes on mine. I found Stoptech drilled rotors at Tirerack. $60 each for the fronts and $64 each for the rear. Are Stoptech okay? I'm not looking into tracking the car. Its a DD and occasional canyon runs. If not, I was looking into the Centric. I'm gonna be changing all 4 so I I'm trying to save as much $ as I can.

Also, what type of pads besides OEM do you guys recommend?

Thanks!

I have only heard great things fro guys who run Stop Tech at the track. I think you made a good choice, regardless of whether or not its tracked, but if it's good enough for track abuse, then street driving will be fine.

I have always liked EBC Red Stuff pads.

StopTech brakes are awesome. I would put a set of their brakes on my car before Wilwood, Brembo and all the others. Also, StopTech and Centric are the same company now.

As for rotors, I'd simply go with Centric's Powerslot. I asked the guys who do the service on my Mini (BR Racing in Los Gatos, CA) whether I should get the ones with the special cryo treatment and they said that while the cryo ones will last a bit longer, they're more money as well.

Also, read some of Stoptech's technical papers. Strictly speaking, slotted rotors are the way to go and drilled are a little less desirable, at least that's so if you're getting generic drilled rotors. Drilled rotors have to be made very carefully, otherwise small cracks can occur around the holes. But for street use and light track use, drilled rotors are usually fine if you really want the looks. I have drilled JCW rotors on the front right now and Centric power slots on the rear. When the fronts wear out, I'll likely put Powerslots up front as well.

For pads, I run Hawk HPS. At first, they didn't have the same degree of "bite" that the stock pads have, but after a while, I've grown to like them. Though I may try something else next time around.

And read StopTech's papers on bedding in brakes.

Oh, and I installed Centric Powerslot rotors and their ceramic pads on my wife's Nissan Murano. After bedding in, they are GREAT! And FYI, you can buy Centric rotors and pads directly from Amazon now. The best prices.
