If you mean Michelin Pilot Exalto in the High Performance A/S category, I think they probably still rule that category. Check them out at www.tirerack.com.

Would there be any good tires that would deliver comfort and less road noise without forgoing performance?

I checked your old posts and found where you reported getting Michelin Exalto PE2 in the 215/45/17 size, so my initial guess above was incorrect. The PE2 is an Ultra High Performance Summer tire instead of an A/S tire. If you intend to stick with a high performance summer tire in that size, I'd recommend the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (MPSS) in the Maximum Performance Summer category. They seem to do it all; high performance in wet and dry conditions, with ride comfort and low noise. Several people here have reported being very happy with them.

When I checked at the Tire Rack site (you should go there too), the Michelin Exalto PE2s were on close-out.

Take a look at 205/45-17 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus 205/45ZR17/XL 88Y . After two other sets of tires (runflats and non) I've finally got a set of tires that are quiet and give a very comfortable ride in my 2004 MCS. I bought the Sparco wheels through TireRack but the tires from Sam's Club. At the time I bought them, Sam's was offering a great price and passed along the manufacturer's rebates. Also as a member, they throw in "Road Hazard" warranties as part of the installation fee. These are highly rated on the Michelin site for wear life, comfort, and fuel efficiency. The change in ride comfort and noise (reduced) was immediately felt and appreciated by my wife!

We tried the conti dws tires...they gave me motion sickness, had poor dry traction, poor snow traction, excellent wet traction. Had them on three months, discount tire did a ride adjustment and Goodyear eagle gt's went back on. Excellent all season tire, great in the snow and rain..and sticks like glue on dry pavement! Just my 2cents.

Had the same Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 tire on the R53 and we replaced them with Conti DW. So far, so good with that tire.

Note that there is a big difference between the Conti DW and the DWS. The DWS is the all season version and I have them on one of my BMW's. I can't seem to get them balanced correctly and have had the car checked for worn parts and wheel checked as well. I can;t wait to get them off the car and I will repalce them shortly with less than 10k miles on them.

I am on my second set of Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S (205/50-16) on my 2004 MC. They have been great for me. I am a former Michelin Tire Corporation employee on the manufacturing side, and still buy Michelin tires. Their tire building technology is well ahead of anyone else that I know of.
