Crank Pulley Removal Help (2004 MCS)

Recently my crank pulley went south in two parts, and I am now trying to remove the second half from the crank. The problem is the crank spins when trying to remove crank bolt. Holding the brake pedal with the ignition switch in position 2, and the car in gear....DOES NOT WORK. I have read where threading 2 M6 bolts into the pulley hub coupled with a screwdriver wedged against the frame will all for removal, but then how will I stop the crank from turning when I go to install the new pulley, as I will have no way to stop the crank from spinning as I try to tighten/mount it to the crank.

What i did is put a socket wrench on the bolt with a pipe on the end of the wrench and the other end on the ground. Hopped in the car a gave a very quick turn of the key. Bolt broke loose and it was easy going from there. The crank spins clockwise if you are looking at from the wheel well for reference. Be carefull doing this since you can seriously harm the car or yourself if something goes wrong.

Thanks for the quick response. I have heard of this being done as you say and I may have to end of going that route.

It's pretty easy to do. The tool would have made it much easier, but, as much as love to collect specialized tools i couldn't afford it at the time. When installing the new pulley normal brake pressure should keep it from moving while you torque the bolt down. Just have a friend/spouse or a 2x4 hold the pedal down. And don't forget to get a new crank bolt or use blue loctite on the original.

I decided to give it a go by bumping the ignition with a pipe touching the ground....it worked like a charm and the bolt came right out. Now my problem is the m6 bolts threaded into the pulley hub/pulley puller keep bending without moving the pulley forward to get it off. I may have to go with a crows foot type puller instead of the flat one with 3 screws and 1 driving bolt. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks once again for the info Clay on getting the pulley bolt off.
