R50/53 Union Jack and the origination of the MINI emblem?
Why is it called the "Union Jack"? And why the winged emblem - just 'cause it looks cool or is there some history behind it? Thanks. Just curious. I GOT MINE YESTERDAY!! by the way.
The Union Jack is called union because it reflects the union of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland and (Northern) Ireland. If you look at a Union Jack. you can see the three crosses that represent the patron saints of three of the countries.
And don't try to get a firm hold on the meaning of "Jack". There are dozens of theories on that one.

The Wings are a stylizing of the old Morris emblem - look at the bonnet of a Morris Mini or Minor and you'll see the 'wings' to the sides of a circle around the Morris Bull - Austin Coopers and big Healey's also had wings ...
