confused need help (oil change)

I just did my first oil change on my 2007 MCS and even though i bought the Craven dip stick I still could not read the oil level. The Craven seems to work best when the oil is not brand new.
By finally putting my finger on the stick i could tell that there was oil there, but now I have probably 4.8 quarts in the car. Is this ok? The manual states to put in 4.4, do I have to remove some oil?
I really hope not, since the reason I changed the oil is because it was leaking a little from the oil plug after i removed some oil after over filling it trying to read the oem dip stick.
Your help would be appreciated.
Dan

Roll it on a paper towel to see where the oil is.

Read it stone cold - I never check it warm - a lesson in futility.

Since many delerships over fill it a bit - I am thinking no harm will come. Ours reads very full since the dealership service 3 months ago.
