Oil filters?

Hi Folks,

I searched and found a lot on oil filters and oil, but had one more question. Seems some people have claimed MANN oil filters have failed or been 'bad' when removed from the car.

I just changed my oil and used 5W30 mobil 1 and a MANN oil filter, it seems to be very similar to the type used on the porsche boxster I had years ago.

Has anyone here actually see a failure of some kind of the MANN filters and if so what happened? Or is it one of those internet rumors?

Thanks!

I just buy the OEM MINI filters, Morristown MINI usually have them in 3 packs on ebay. On a side note, Mobil 1 5w-30 dosen't meet the BMW Long Life rating for the MINI. Mobil 1 0w-40 European Car fomula is the only one that does in the Mobil 1 line. I'm sure you will be fine with the Mobil 1 you put in, I just wouldn't go over 6-7k miles without changing it again.

We've been using Mann filters for years and haven't seen any fail. I also used them at another independent shop I used to work for maintaining a taxi cab fleet (who's cars were on the road 16+ hours per day) on the Sprinter vans. Not to say they can't fail, but we haven't seen any. We also use BMW LL-04 certified 5w30 synthetic oil made by Motul.

Rather than mess with that funky canister filter from the 1950's - I change just my oil at 6 months - then the dealer does the full deal at 12 months. Low mileage grocery getter, 6,000 - 10,000 a year max.

Yeah I plan on changing the oil every 8000 miles which is about half the normal 'long life' oil is rated at.

I did a google search and did find one guy had a failed MANN filter on a bmw, apparently it split where the accordion element is glued together to form a complete ring.
However I think this is rare and happened on a filter that was fitted to the car for a long time, so it may have been very clogged and so failed due to pressure buildup.

Thanks everyone

We only recommend using the OEM MINI filters. Especially if your under warranty, you don't want to give them an out if you have a failure. They will try to blame you for not using the right filter if you have an engine or timing chain failure.
Also we've seen the aftermarket filters don't fit near as well as the OEM.
